Review summary

We sailed from Civitavechia/Rome on 15th September. Boarding quite painless, through check in less than 10 minutes. Went to our room and met our efficient, very friendly and attentive steward Abraham Lincoln from Trinidad. We had lunch at the Windjammer. The Windjammer for breakfast or lunch was something we did out of necessity. The quality of food was adequate (we enjoyed the omelettes) but the crowd of people made it uncomfortable. The food in the main restaurant for breakfast and lunch was good and I enjoyed the salad bar and the service was excellent. The food in the main restaurant, Top Hat and Tails, was good and usually hot, the service was average. I always add ice to my wine but every meal I had to request the ice except once (the day after the headwaiter was informed of our problems). One of our fellow diners at our table requested a cappuccino only to be told that the machine was broken. Also, someone at the table requested strawberries which were not on that days menu and was told it was not available, although it was available to the next table. A couple at our table made a complaint and for the rest of the cruise The headwaiter was informed of both of these items and for the rest of the cruise cappuccinos and strawberries arrived daily but it made the waiters nervous and made us uncomfortable. Our room was excellent and Abraham was always smiling and helpful (reminding us to take water, sunscreen & hats) when leaving on our excursions. We were very disappointed our excursions to Egypt were cancelled but Royal Caribbean made the decision that it was too dangerous due to the situation. They made the best of a bad situation by scheduling stops in Malta & Sicily. The excursions booked through the cruise were expensive but well worth it. The tour guides were very good if not excellent, except for in Malta (which was a last minute change in the itinerary). Of the 2 pools, we loved the Solarium as it was much quieter and adults only.
