Review summary
My group of 4 friends enjoyed our cruise. I had been on the ship 18 years prior and it felt much newer other than the theater. Our room was smaller but still functioned well and we were able to watch the fortress of Havana as we went into port. Havana was a great place to visit and I really learned a lot about their culture. The pool area was well maintained and we enjoyed the addition of corn hole and giant jenga. The entertainment shows we went to were great but the entertainment staff wasn't out as much as some of my past cruises other than when events were planned. We enjoyed the food, but wish the pizza place had stayed open later on the Havana night as we needed some sustenance after dancing off dinner in Havana! If you're interested in seeing Havana, I'd definitely recommend this cruise. If you just want to experience cruising and don't care about the ports, I still recommend RCCL but consider looking at other ships.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Quick and easy - they had copies for the Cuban visa and all forms needed. You get your Cuban visa card along with your sea pass
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Food was typical for RCCL. Since it is a smaller ship they do not have as may specialty dining options. They had more Cuban food choices on the way to Cuba. Rated 4 stars because the pizza place closed earlier than when we were required to get back on the ship in Cuba and we tried to get room service but waited on hold and didn't get a person.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
They have most of the typical RCCL game shows. I would have liked the newlywed game to be at night instead of in the afternoon since we didn't want to leave the pool area. Fitness center was clean and I loved that it had a punch bag!
Entertainment
4 out of 5
We didn't make all of the shows but enjoyed all the ones that we went to. The DJ was not great at reading the room and played mostly Latin music even when people weren't dancing to it.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
The majority of the staff was excellent and on par with my other experiences. We did have a different wait staff one night and they kept forgetting our table was in their section. It took longer to order but we actually got our food faster than normal.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
This is an older ship so there were a few things that were different but it was smaller and easy to get around. The areas were all clean and most had been well updated. The beds were a little harder than what I've experienced in the past and the seats in the theatre leaned forward (so go for the couch area instead).
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
Cabins on this ship are smaller than what I previously experienced but the set up still worked. We had a conjoining room with our friends which worked out well. The only thing I missed was having a mini fridge to have cold drinks in the room. Our cabin attendant did bring us ice to get our wine cold which was great.
Ship tip
If you go to bed early, don't get a cabin on the 8th floor. We could hear/feel Boleros in our room. We actually enjoyed it but were usually back for bed after it was closed.
Visiting Havana was a great experience and was very different from other ports of call. At the time we sailed, there was still a "Support of the Cuban People" option as a reason to travel and we found great excursions through Airbnb experience. We were able to get a very real picture of life in Havana and met some great people. The overnight experience was also an amazing way to experience Havana nightlife!
I've always had fun in Cozumel. Before I've done Mr. Sanchos but this time we booked La Playa Mia through the cruise line because there was a pre-cruise discount that made it cheaper. It was also fun meeting people from other cruises while we were here. Next time I want to try the Amazing Cozumel Race!
We chose to carry off our suitcases. The time it took from leaving our room to being done with customs was less than 20 minutes. Just be prepared to wait for elevators or do like us and carry suitcases down the stairs.
