Review summary

This was our first RC cruise. We have done Carnival several times, so we did not know what to expect. This cruise blew us away so much, we will be booking on an Oasis-class ship next! RC Liberty of the Seas did not disappoint! Here's a short review... Boarding we were unsure of, but Galveston has it together. We checked bags for the first time ever around 10:45-11am. They ended up by our room before we went to the safety briefing, it was nice to be all put away before that started. The check-in was a breeze, you get your card, go upstairs, a guy gave us a boarding card 8, then another gentleman asked what I had, he gave me a group 6 card. When they started calling groups it was so quiet. No rushing, no lines, it was so pleasant! We are used to the mad rush with Carnival, this was a wow so nice surprise. Once inside, we were again pretty excited. The Promenade is amazing. You feel like you are sitting in a little town. I don't think I can sail RC on a smaller ship without it. We sat out every evening at the Hoof and Claw enjoying the scenery with a drink. The water slides, Flow Rider, and adult pool were enjoyed almost daily. In the last 2 days we rode slides each morning as long as we could walk up those stairs. Go early when they open at 9 am for no lines! The only complaint was there was always a line for Flow Rider and the same 5 guys who surf rode it all day every day. It would be nice to have levels throughout the day besides just standing or boogie boarding. I'm sure the ships with 2 it probably evens out some. Food was so so and not what we expected. While no meal was bad (except a questionable burger at the buffet), they seemed to not understand when we special ordered, it was for a reason. Gluten-free is on my file, they always acknowledged this, great. But they'd then bring out husband's food, and I would wait 10 minutes, once for a burger with no bun, because he said they were waiting on fries after I said no fries. We did have 2 nights with great waiters that got it right, so again, not just to complain about. The guac and apps at Sabor are amazing. The food is okay. We probably will do it again for lunch. Giovanni's was mediocre at best. We were disappointed to get several overdone steaks we ordered medium-rare. Chops was great. However, they really need to move it. Listening to the kids club skee ball at dinner on a formal night is not a romantic dinner. Overall we had a blast. Found a favorite bartender, Lancelot, from Jamaica, at the Hoof and Claw. Go say hi if you are on board soon. He is leaving in 3 months on vacation. He was the sweetest, nice to talk to, and made amazing drinks! Go see In the Air! It is hands down, the best show on the ship! The comedian we went to was dreadful. People were leaving, we almost got up to leave as well. It was just not funny and he had to keep telling people it was okay to laugh. On a final note, our room attendant, Franchezca, Fran, also from Jamaica is sooooo sweet. I enjoyed chatting with her and even though we never asked, she cleaned twice a day. Sneaky after we would leave for dinner too. I left her a note with a tip on the last night on the monkey she made us. She went out of her way on our departure today to come by, thank us, and give me a hug to let us know how much that meant to her. I am not saying you have to rip anyone but leave them a note saying how much you appreciate them. They really do care and she was so happy to hear we enjoyed and appreciated her!

Embarkation

First time on RC, no complaints on embarkation. It was easy, smooth, and we boarded fast.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food is eh. The MDR for breakfast is nothing to rave about. Lunch in the MDR was dreadful, and the dinner was just okay. The Sabor was great, and Chops, but Giovanni's cooked way over on everything and was not worth the money. The buffet was actually the best food on the ship.

Main Dining Room

3 out of 5

Good mostly. Dinner was okay, but not fabulous. The breakfast and lunch were not worth the time.

Chop's Grille

4 out of 5

Great food, but being under the kids club is making it not enjoyable.

Johnny Rockets

3 out of 5

Food was mediocre for the price. Not worth it.

Olive or Twist

3 out of 5

Very odd bar. We were expecting a martini bar, but it has the same ole menu the rest of the ship has. The only thing great about it is the view.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Also, the water slides and tube slide first thing in the morning were dead, so we did them several times in a row daily. The adult pool would get very crowded by Noon.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Great shows! If you can, go see In the Air. The comedian we went to was just not funny. It was blah. The Ice Show Encore was amazing as well!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We met a few great bartenders and waiters. Some seemed to have zero cares and were slow and not friendly. But overall, they were pleasant. We loved our room steward Fran! She was always smiling and so nice!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
For a busy older ship, it was clean and well-maintained. They could use some new things here and there, but what ship doesn't.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Huge cabin and balcony! We loved it! It would be a 5-star but the bed was rock hard as were the pillows. It was always super clean.

Ship tip

Go sit in the Promenade in the evening and watch the lights dim while you have a drink. It is a great place to sit!

Ports of call

Galveston, Texas

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
We love Cozumel. It is always our favorite port.

George Town, Grand Cayman

4 out of 5
Taxi service is ridiculous. We probably won't do this port again. It took almost 30 minutes for him to fill it up so we could leave the Royal Palms.

Falmouth, Jamaica

5 out of 5
We just stayed in port at Margaritaville. We thought it was nice and clean.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
They let all of the groups leave at once and it was a line all the way from the stairs inside, all the way down to the terminate. Not efficient. But, we were only in line 30 minutes so not too too bad.

Liberty is a great ship. It’s our favorite class size ship. Oasis class is too big and too crowded. Liberty and Freedom are perfect size.

Royal room attendants clean the cabin twice daily unless you request not to; had no idea this was not standard across the industry. I keep hearing complaints about the food lately, and I hope that these are very rare incidents. Glad that you enjoyed your first RCCL cruise and thanks for sharing your experience.
