Review summary

Attn: Families traveling with KIDS or SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS Royal Caribbean LIBERTY OF THE SEAS was a LARGE DISAPPOINTMENT to our family this Summer 2019. I read numerous reviews that had praised this ship for many things and saw nothing close to them on our vacation. We are a family of 4 (2 Adults and 2 children age 5,7) the minute we walked into our ocean view stateroom it was clear this boat is VERY OUTDATED. The light fixtures and décor were something I would expect to see in a low rate motel. We then noticed the SINGLE KING sized bed for our FAMILY OF FOUR. Quickly we realized there were Bunk BEDS that lowered OVER our bed. This was NOT what we had asked for. There was also a label in plane view stating NO CHILDREN UNDER AGE 6 can sleep in the bunks! How did we end up in a room with a 5 year old that can't even use the bed!? I spoke with guest services and after many visits to the desk I was told the ship was completely booked and there was NOTHING THEY COULD DO. This made for a VERY DISAPPOINTING first day of vacation. To add to our HORRIBLE experience I pre registered to notify the ship of my GLUTEN ALLERGY and WAS STARVING by the end of the second day. I spoke with guest services and they were kind enough to put me in touch with kitchen staff. I spoke to the Manager of the Windjammer (Albert) and he did what he could to accommodate my needs during the day. The only issue with this was I had to PRE ORDER ALL MY MEALS A DAY AHEAD. The was no spur of the moment I am hungry and could grab a quick snack (unless fruit or veggies). Also the Pizza Place located in the Promenade took 15-20min to make a GF pizza. My family would be done eating by time I even had 1 slice. The MAIN DINING room experience was probably the HIGHLIGHT of our experience. I pre ordered my dinners nightly and they also made me two desserts so I could save one in my room for later (side note the fridge in our room stated the MINIMUM TEMP was 55 degrees!) so there was no keeping things "cold". The ship was FULL of places you had to PAY EXTRA to dine at. The desserts that were free and available were something you would see served in a school cafeteria. The Kids center was less then exciting and my children had little to no interest in attending. Both were placed in Aquanauts (we requested they stay together) and daily activities were not stimulating enough to keep their interest. We had to bribe them to even attend the program at least once a day so that we would have time to ourselves. When the children were with us (which was a majority of the time) there was NOTHING TO DO especially on SEAS DAYS. Not that we had intended on watching much TV but lets just say our favorite show to watch was Dougie Howser (it was 7 channels of the 80's on repeat). Most of the Planned activities were again at an EXTRA COST. These consisted of bingo, wine tasting, and fine art auctions. The ENTERTAINMENT was NON EXSISTANT. The next best thing to do was spend time at the pool. This was another LARGE DISAPOINTMENT there were so many people in the pool you couldn’t even swim. I took Numerous photos of both the FAMILY and ADULT pools FULL of people. The stated number of maximum occupants was 18 and there was more then double that in every pool. They were most likely so busy due to the fact there was NO ENTERTAINMENT. My previous cruising experience one various ships were leaps and bounds beyond this ship. Our last vacation out of Galveston was on a Carnival ship. So we thought investing an ADDITIONAL 1,000 TO ROYAL CARRIBEAN would be a top of the line experience and we were SADLY MISTAKEN. I DO NOT recommend ever taking a FAMILY VACATION on the LIBERTY OF THE SEAS. We couldn’t wait to get off the ship and our kids were happy it was over. Customer services lines on the ship were also ALWAYS BUSY and I am not surprised. I hope you find this review helpful and take it seriously if you are looking at going on a cruise. This is a CRUISE PEOPLE GO ON AND NEVER WANT TO CRUISE AGAIN, but we know this is not a true "cruise experience".

Sorry, not sorry, your vacation is what you make it. Something I learned my 1st year of college : RESEARCH and PLANNING ACCORDINGLY goes a long , long way. I for one am very glad RC Liberty isn't very kid friendly. I must agree with the others. From your review you must have expected Carnival, well RC isn't for the cheap at pockets.

Had you done even a little research prior to cruising, or even booking your cruise, you would have found all the answers to your complaints. It clearly states in many different places that there are other places to eat but they have a little bit of a cost associated with them. When I cruised, the pools were full, mostly kids, but I didn’t let that keep me from having fun. Things are what you make of them. Sounds to me like your vacation was ruined as soon as you stepped foot on the ship. But your vacation wasn’t ruined by RCI, you ruined it for yourself.

Maybe if you took time out of your day PRIOR to CRUISING, you would SEE that there are specialty restaurants that are additional as well as other things that aren’t free like on carnival and realize that “hmmm, maybe I should do carnival where more is included for no cost, and is known solely for its more kid friendly atmosphere.” I think you got rubbed wrong by not knowing things in advance like setting up dietary concerns which led you to be upset and point out of notice every little tiny flaw that you could find. Do your research. Just a bad vacation planner who’s trying to blame the cruise-line for your bad planning. Booking a ocean view stateroom is your own fault and I don’t know why anyone in the world would for a family of four. I wouldn’t want to be there either with four people in a 100 sq ft. Living quarters and I love cruising! Poorly planned vacation to say the least.

*accommodated Also the food was plenty and delicious! My kids cruise with us always and we have a great time maybe try a different type of vacation.

I went on this cruise as well my son is 5 he slept just fine on the bunk bed you get what you paid for. We now know we need a spacious family suite and that’s what we booked on our next cruise. You know dietary needs can be or should be addressed BEFORE you sail so you can be acomodares.

Carnival may be better for younger children. It sounds like you really need to go with Disney or maybe cruising isn’t for you.

Royal Caribbean doesn't send their best and newest to Galveston but Liberty is by far, not the most dated ship. Put it perspective, it was designed before the first iPhone 12 years ago. A lot of things have changed but it's not a POS either. ANY ship at full capacity sucks.

Who takes the pictures like you took? An inspector?

You definitely should have did more research.. I have been on that ship 3 times and had a great experience each time. I feel as if you just wanted to complain about everything. And to top it off you should've known that the Royal Caribbean lines are more of a relaxation environment. If you are looking for a party ship the stay your ass on carnival.

It seems as if a lot of your problems could have been solved had you done a little research beforehand. How could you not know what your room looked like? There are videos online of all types. Same with pretty much everything you complained about.

Sorry for your disappointment, however we set sail the day you got back. We had a family of 4. Two adults and two kids (ages 9 and 7). Our kids have been cruising with us since 5 and 3 and have never been a big fan of the kids area, however that was 99% because they didn't want to be watched by someone they didn't know. They felt more comfortable hanging with us and we understood that. Yes the ship might be "outdated", but it is still an awesome ship and it is set to get amplified in 2021. I have left a review under my profile if you'd like to see and will leave you with saying sorry in general, but we had a blast and will be back next year!
