Review summary

Check TV for account summary. Tips are added to account for person attending cabin. I personally only needed trash emptied and clean towels. If you’re low maintenance and your attendee doesn’t go out of his way—why should you be changed for it?

Best thing to do is to prepay them with your final cruise payment. This way you are all set and can just sit back and enjoy your cruise. Consider doing the same if you are a drinker. Buy the alcohol package before you go it cost less then if you wait to purchase it online.

1st time cruiser. How much are these additional tips? I will need to prepare. TIA

I’ve never had tips removed from my account and when I’ve had staff go above and beyond I’ve tipped extra. I do question having to tip for an infant/toddler that the staff doesn’t do anything for, but I always paid it anyway when I traveled with a child who was that young. If there was ever a tip I had to remove, it would have been for that. Luckily, I’ve never had bad service on a cruise that warranted pulling back gratuities. I would rather the cruise lines built tips into the fare though and paid the crew a decent wage.

Love Woobiescoobie’s comment.

We agree. If you’re preparing your own food, taking care of your cabin, getting your own clean towels and taking out your own garbage and steering the ship you shouldn’t have to pay any gratuity

That's kind of like saying why should you tip at a restaurant? Waiters typically make 2.15 an hour that's how they make their money from tips and many times have to share it with bus boys. If you had a problem with your room attendant you could probably go and talk to someone about it at the desk. Otherwise it's a shared gratuity between all service people on bored. We have always had an amazing room attendants and amazing dining room staff. We have always given them extra money on top of the gratuities. Last Cruise earlier this year the room Stuard across from us was amazing and we even gave her extra money. Our bed was turned down every night we had cute little towel animals. Our room was always clean with extra towels our trash was thrown away beds were turned down and made up. Just can't say enough about staff we've had in the past. And great people to get to talk to and hear their stories. Working on a cruise ship is a whole other world. From some of the countries these people come from this is a great opportunity for them and they leave their families for months and months at a time. They leave their children and only get to Skype with them. No I'm not saying you should tip these people because yes this is their choice but they're just amazing people. If you ever go on a cruise again I suggest you get to know some of these people that make your cruise comfortable for you.

This is nothing new! If you didnt know about this, then you dont now much about cruising.

If you can't afford the tip, you can't afford the cruise. Whether you choose to use their services or not, they are offered and they still deserve the tip. If you want to be stingy, go to a hotel instead.

gratuities are shared among dining, bar & culinary services staff, stateroom attendants and other hotel services teams who work behind the scenes to enhance the cruise experience.

How about this, use the same towels every day, bring a garbage bag with you, use it and take it with you when you leave. Make sure you leave the Do Not Disturb sign on your door all week too. Oh, and you might as well pack a weeks worth of food also because the dining staff gets a cut of the amount your charged and I'd hate to see you feel the guilt of using them. Also, try not to leave a mess anywhere you go so housekeeping doesn't have to clean up after you. Then, by all means, feel free to have the service charge removed from your bill.

No different than a hotel

The auto gratuities go to many more people than just your room steward. We just leave them and consider it part of the cost of cruising. Happy sailing all

That is how they make most of their wages. The service crew is not typically paid very well. You are allowed to remove the daily gratuity if you want but it must be done before disembarking I think.
