Review summary

Royal Caribbean for us is the only way to cruise.  We've tried others, but we always come back to what we consider to be the best.  Three of my husband's sisters cruised with us on this cruise - birthday presents - and they loved it.  For two sisters, it was their first time cruising and they'll be back.  An eighty year old and an eighty-five year old - how's that for being first-time cruisers?!!!

RC staff are always smiling and our stateroom attendants were always singing.  How can they be singing?  First thing in the morning and they're cleaning everyone's rooms and bathrooms?  But there they are singing and joking with each other - smiling from ear to ear.  What a glorious greeting we had each morning.

This cruise went to the Western Caribbean and the stops were terrific.  We did the Big French Key island tour on our first stop and it was definitely not worth it.  It did not have "beautiful clear blue waters" - the water we had to swim in was murky and muddy - we sank up to our ankles in gunk - very unappealing and I didn't even want to put my body into the water.  Definitely not up to RC standard regarding their tours.

Costa Maya was fantastic - we did the 8-hour day trip to the ruins and we were not disappointed.  I would suggest taking some extra snacks to eat; the sandwich we were given was on basic white bread, with a small piece of cheese on it and it hardly gave any sustenance which was needed as we climbed up the ruins.

Cozamel would have been fabulous had we taken a tour but we went in and out of the jewellery stores (don't do it!!!!) trying to "win" a raffle that the ship's entertainment bloke runs.  Do yourself a favour and do one of the tours.  We heard that the beach and snorkelling tours were fabulous.

Our stateroom attendant was fantastic. Bouquets to him. I would love to have a balcony room - maybe next time?!

Ship tip

Refer above. My only complaint would be the lousy Big French Key Island tour.

We are booked January for our 2nd cruise on RC but are going to try Carnival in April mostly because I wanted to go to Atlantis for an excursion and RC doesn't offer a Nassau stop from our closest departure port.

I like RC and Carnival for different reasons. I think Carnival is great if you want to party and dance and drink the whole time, and it's typically a younger crowd. To me, RC was an older crowd, and it was much more about relaxing on vacation - watching the shows on board, lounging at the pool, etc. I guess it depends on the type of vacation you want.

We're the opposite. Tried Royal a couple times. Enjoyed it, but not nearly as much activity going on at night. Much older demographic too, which is probably why. We felt food quality was about the same. We stick with the Fun ship line.
