A great mini break and excellent value for money. We actually booked an inside cabin but Princess upgraded us the next day which was a wonderful surprise.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
We have priority boarding which was the smoothest ever. On the ship within 30 mins from the main entrance to the terminal and having lunch in the dining room within the hour.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
2 out of 5
We are vegetarians and as usual with Princess we were disappointed with the HOT selections. In the buffet for example, apart from eggs, there was not a HOT alternative for breakfast. Even the potatoes often had meat or fish mixed in. In the main dining room there was only ever one choice per night. Bars were great as were the cocktails
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
In the three days of the cruise we didn't actually do any of the on board activities except the Art lectures and auctions.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The Bayou show was outstanding. The best I have seen on Princess. Some of the musicians were not that good. Spring Quartet excellent.
Service and Staff

Everyone was extremely helpful, courteous, friendly and very good at their jobs.
Ship Quality

We had never been on the Island Princess before although have sailed many times with Princess. The layout is very different. I absolutely hated the Casino being open to the main walkway. I have severe asthma to cigarette smoke and although they dont have smoking every night there was certainly a smell all the time in the walkway. I had a bad attack the first time we tried to go to the photo gallery past the casino. The same thing applied to the Churchill Lounge. Why have it in the main atrium next to the shops and main areas. Every time the door to the room was opened of course smoke smells came out. The layout of the ship is way different from the others we have sailed. No Alfredos, no International Cafe, no nightclub.
Cabin / Stateroom

Same as balcony on other ships which to us has a great layout. Plenty of storage space and room to move around. Our steward was excellent. Cabin was always clean and detailed
Ship tip
Check the deck plans. Make sure your cabin is in a quiet area before you book. I always do this very carefully looking for what is above us and whether the balcony is close to noise from the sun deck and amplified music. We personally never go above the Baja deck for this reason.
We disembarked there. You dont want to be wandering around the port area. Because our flight from LAX was not til 5pm we took a tour from the ship to Long Beach. The coach picked us up at the ship with all our luggage. At Long Beach we had three hours to do our own thing. Then we boarded the coach again which took us to the airport. The bags were on the coach the whole time and it was secured when we left it. A great way to kill time and get to the airport
Nice upgrade! I always book a specific cabin so I have turned down my one and only upgrade offer. BUT - should a full suite upgrade ever be presented, I am sure I would swap my aft corner balcony.
What did they upgrade you too?
We're going in August with an inside cabin and said that we would accept upgrades. We've always had balconies, but trying inside for the first time. 😎🛳️📷
