Review summary

We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and we did it in style. We met some great people and saw a part of the world that was new to us. We saw beautiful people and extreme poverty conditions. An eye opener. We were onboard for 35 days. A bit long because of the number of sea days and missed ports. That was so disappointing. Overall a very good trip.

We were among the first to check I . The staff was completely inexperienced and needed help from the manager every step of the way. Our clerk spoke so softly that you could hardly hear him and seemed completely untrained.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Our favorite restaurant was Toscana followed by the Polo Grill. Polo somehow missed our 50th anniversary nite but invited us back another nite to celebrate. We often ate outside at the Terrace Cafe. We usually spend more time in the dining room but the weather was so good that we enjoyed eating there. Food was quite good—lots of ethnic dishes.

Toscana

Great Italian food. Breadsticks, olive oil and balsamic vinegar were outstanding. Portions are large. I enjoyed the veal, ravioli and the lasagna.

Onboard Activities

I enjoyed the art classes with Suzanne. I really didn’t participate in anything else with the exception of the country fair. Cleverly done. The salon is really expensive.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Ships singers, dancers and musicians were terrific. Others were just okay. The port lecturer was informative but very factual. The other lecturer was interesting but his topic was related to Africa and he didn’t board until much later. Would have liked better lectures.

Library

Fairly well stocked but needed more current best sellers. A bit dated but a lovely room.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Seemed a bit under staffed at times. Difficult to get the attention of the sommelier or drink servers. Our butler and housekeeper were very accommodating. The cruise director was very personable and efficient. In general all of the staff were pleasant and helpful. Tea time was lovely.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
There was a stomach bug going around and the ship took strong measures to get it under control. This is a small ship so it is easy to get anywhere very quickly. Really liked Horizons to relax, get a cup of tea or coffee and just visit or read.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Loved the large shower. The cabin was roomy and well equipped. We used our tablets but a laptop was available. We always had way more fresh fruits than we could eat. Seemed wasteful. I tried to get them to cut back—to no avail. Very comfortable bed.

East London, South Africa

No interesting tour so we just skipped this. The port lecturer had very little to say or recommend.

Durban, South Africa

Really interesting botanical garden and city tour. Walked through a lively market. Husband’s tour to a Zulu village was very touristy but the guide was informative about life in South Africa.

Richards Bay, South Africa

Safari- I wasn’t expecting much but saw many interesting animals including an up close with a rhinoceros! Hluhluwe Game Reserve. A good game Drive.

Maputo, Mozambique

Very little to see. Took a walking tour. Late docking so time was shortened.

Nosy Be, Madagascar Did not visit port

Port was canceled. Upsetting to everyone. Said it was because of tides. How can that be?

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Did not visit port

We had been there before.

Zanzibar, Tanzania Did not visit port

We had toured Zanzibar extensively.

Mombasa, Kenya

My husband took Botha morning and afternoon tour. The afternoon tour was a bust— there were supposed to be many birds but he saw none.

Interesting tour here. Cashew factory, Hindu temple and “typical “ house which was quite upscale.

Cochin, India

My favorite port. Loved the fishing nets. Good guide and a really good tour.

Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar

Arrived late here so tours had to be rearranged. Started with a visit to Swedagon Pagoda at night. Impressive. The next morning we took an all day tour to Bago . On the way we stopped at the WWII cemetery which is beautifully maintained and very moving. We visited a monastery, had a good lunch and saw the Shwethalyauhg Reclining Buddha. Local women wear a yellow paste on their cheeks for sun protection. Drove through a sudden and very strong hailstorm on the way back. The driver had to pull over and stop because he couldn’t see. The next mowe visited a fascinating local market. Not to be missed.

Penang (Pulau Pinang), Malaysia Did not visit port

Again a “tide” problem. Not much confidence in this captain.

Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia

Very modern city. Visited the bird park, butterfly farm and orchid garden. I would skip this tour because there are similar and better tours in Durban and Singapore. The Petronas Twin Towers are very impressive. Shopping was way out of our price range.

Singapore

So much to do and see here. We visited the bird park which was very interesting but we needed more time. We have been to Singapore before and want to return. Great city.
