Although this ship is in desperate need of a refurbishment and the WiFi was mostly non existent, we enjoyed ourselves and the itinerary. All of the staff works very hard and is eager to please. The food in the main dining room was superb! However, out of the 8 cruises we’ve taken, 5 of them with RCCL, this was our least favorite. The ship’s common areas & our balcony constantly reeked of marijuana. The party scene was out of control at times, but could be avoided by moving to another area. The dress code in the main dining room was not enforced at dinner, taking away from the opulence of cruising.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Embarkation was quick, although there was some confusion between employees. One told us to go one way, only to be stopped by another and sent back to stand in a line. There were plenty of friendly employees available, but they didn’t seem to be on the same page.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Food was excellent in the main dining room - some of the best we’ve had with RCCL. Service was over the top! We had 8pm dining and a table for two which was absolutely perfect for us! We ate all of our meals in the main dining room and never walked into the Windjammer. We picked up pizza a couple of times from the Cafe Promenade, which was always fresh, hot & satisfying. My only issue is that they no longer enforce a dress code in the main dining room at dinner - or any other time for that matter. I’m not talking about people wearing nice jeans and a polo. It was anything goes! I saw cut offs, ripped jeans, graphic t-shirts, flip flops, baseball caps, and some very revealing clothing. No one seemed to care about making an extra effort which I believe takes away from the opulence of cruising. It’s ok if people prefer to dress that way, but if they do, they should eat in the Windjammer! Just my opinion.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
There was never a lack of things to do. We enjoyed both pools, hot tub, fitness center, bingo, an organized slot pull in the casino, and our favorite - trivia in the Schooner Bar.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
We only went to see the comedian on the first night & an ice skating show. The comedian was ok, but the ice skating show was fantastic! There was a solo guitarist that performed some in the Schooner Bar who was extraordinary. He would move into the main dining room during our late seating, and I could have listened to him for hours! None of the other entertainment interested us. We were content to just sit on our balcony or nap.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Everyone we encountered was pleasant and eager to please. Our room steward quickly responded to our requests. Our waiters went over and beyond to provide a remarkable dining experience.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
I love the size of this ship. Having recently sailed on Adventure, we already knew the layout. We don’t usually like having to go through the casino to get to venues on the same deck because of the cigarette smoke, and will go up or down stairs and across to avoid it. This time we were able to walk through the casino’s non-smoking side, and it wasn’t bad at all. Unfortunately though, the rest of the ship constantly reeked of marijuana! It was the worst on our balcony, but you could smell it in the halls and in the common areas. Further, our room was definitely showing its age. Upon arrival, our bathroom door was hanging off its hinges and wouldn’t close. Our steward quickly had it repaired. One of our vanity drawers was broken and wouldn’t close. Our curtain was missing a few hooks and hung awkwardly. There was a lot of rust on our balcony and the railing desperately needed refinishing. We were aware prior to sailing that the Explorer missed its scheduled refurbishment during Covid, so none of the disrepair affected our overall experience.
Cabin / Stateroom
2 out of 5
As stated above, our cabin was in desperate need of maintenance. Our bathroom door was hanging off its hinges & wouldn’t close, but our steward quickly had it repaired. The racks in the shower hung at a slant, so it was difficult to store shower items without them falling. One of the vanity drawers was broken & wouldn’t close. Our curtains were missing hooks and hung awkwardly. Our balcony was very rusty and the railing needed refinishing. Fortunately, the bed was super comfortable and I slept great with ear plugs (even when the toddler next door was screaming).
Ship tip
This was our 8th cruise; 5th with RCCL, so we’re still learning the ropes. On this trip I discovered if you email rcldining@rccl.com with your dining requests 14 days prior to your cruise, they will honor them. For example, we were celebrating my husband’s 60th birthday, had 8pm dining, and wanted a table for two. RCCL quickly responded to my email and honored our request with our table number, deck and ship side prior to sailing! Every other time we’ve sailed and requested a table for two at booking, it wasn’t honored. We were seated with others for our honeymoon and anniversaries, so had to ask to be moved once on board.
We booked the Blue Hole, Dunn’s River Falls, Reggae Hill excursion. The trek to the meeting point was a lot further than expected and was chaotic when we arrived, but it all worked out. I recommend leaving early! This cruise was in celebration of my husband’s 60th birthday, so we chose to do the most adventurous excursion thinking we might not be able to do it in years to come. Neither the Blue Hole or Dunn’s River Falls would fly in the US because of safety issues, but we survived and had a blast!! Water shoes and waterproof phone cases are required. You’ll want plenty of cash for tipping. AMEX is not accepted anywhere. You can leave your bags with towels and sunscreen in their locked van at the stops. Ride to and from the cruise port is a little over an hour, so if you’re uncomfortable riding back in a wet suit, bring dry clothes.
This was our favorite stop! Labadee was picturesque and serene. Once again, we didn’t have to spend a dime to thoroughly enjoy ourselves. We started at Nellie’s Cove where we swam and relaxed in loungers (there were plenty of loungers to be found on every beach). We then made our way over to Columbus Cove where we swam again. We ate hamburgers and watermelon salad at the Columbus Cove Cafe. We walked through the shops on our way over to Dragon’s Beach, but didn’t buy anything. At Dragon’s Beach we waded out to the swim up bar (not as deep as the one at CocoCay) and tried out the over-the-water swings. We agreed that we liked Nellie’s Beach best, so made our way back & remained there for the day. Note the walk is not as far as it appears. We took the tram in, but walked all the way back to the ship. Next time we will be sure to pack some blow up noodle float chairs!
This was our first time here. We loved the fact that we didn’t have to spend a dime to enjoy our day, as food & beverages were provided (we were able to use our drink package here and in Labadee). We brought along our own snorkel gear so ventured over to Chill Island first and snorkeled around the rock levee. The water was cloudy, but there was plenty of fish to be seen if you ventured out far enough. Harmony was in port as well, but there were plenty of beach loungers to be found and plenty of wait staff eager to fetch a cocktail. After Chill Island, we ventured over to Oasis Lagoon. The water was clean and refreshing, but the bar was packed. Afterwards, we grabbed chicken sandwiches (with mozzarella sticks inside) and French fries that were extremely tasty from a Snack Shack. We eventually made our way to South Beach where we remained for most of the day. I wanted to try out the swim up bar, but it was totally overrated! The water was over my head, so once you got up, you had to stay until you finished your drink (unless you have special swimming skills)! There was only one bar tender, so the wait was extremely long. We really enjoyed sitting on a sand bar and even tried out the big round trampoline looking floats that were super comfortable. Once Harmony left port, we felt like we had the island to ourselves and scored front row loungers. We eventually made our way back to the ship but stopped at the Oasis Lagoon along the way. By that time, it had become an obnoxious, overage, drunk, Spring Break-like party (luckily our kids weren’t with us). Tip: Bring a waterproof phone case on a lanyard where you can store your sea pass card and cash along with your phone. That way you can comfortably leave your beach bag with towels, sunscreen, snorkel gear, etc in a lounger when you’re in the water without worrying about it disappearing.
We flew into FLL one day prior and stayed at the Hilton Downtown Miami. We only ventured as far as the marina area for dinner. It’s easy to fly into Ft Lauderdale or Miami and Uber to a hotel near the cruise port. There are plenty of hotels & restaurants near the cruise port to choose from that allows for a quick and inexpensive Uber to the port on embarkation day.
Thankfully, we had The Key so we were escorted to the front of the line for disembarkation. Otherwise, it looked like total chaos! It definitely was chaotic finding a spot on the curb to hook up with an Uber driver with the thousands of other guests doing the same.
Have sailed on Explorer of the Seas 3x in past & scheduled to cruise on her March 2023. So glad that you had a positive cruise experience!! Great memories!!!
