Review summary

Would love to go back to Curacao and Aruba! They are wonderful ports of call, but only with private tours through the local operators we found. We snorkeled, just the two of us with our captain of our own private boat and witnessed the cruise guests we were sailing with on boats with 60+ people. We went to some of the same attractions as the masses from the ship but it was times right so that when we were arriving or departing we were avoiding buses that were carrying hundreds of people. Doing it our way, Curacao and Aruba was amazing. Grand Cayman is also a wonderful port of call if you have never been there before.

Pretty quick, some chaos, no meet & greet, and no welcome aboard beverage.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
The food and service in the main dining room was the worst we have ever experienced in our 10 cruises on 9 different ships, all Royal Caribbean. We ended up walking out at 9:10 pm after finally getting and trying our main course for dinner. The first night we never received drinks until 20 to 25 minutes after we were seated, and the main course had to be sent back because it was so poorly prepared. We decided to give them another try, but our second meal in the main dining room went ever worse than the first. Same problem with beverages, but this time our main course never arrived until almost 9:00 pm, an hour after being seated. After a few bites of raw pasta and cold Chicken Parmisan, we gave up and left. We ended up eating sliced pizza from the deli. After that we ate dinners in the Windjammer. It was awful. The food looked bad, tasted bad, lacked variety, flavor and textures were off, food was repurposed from previous days, and hot food was room temperature as was cold dishes. I don't mind left-overs, but mixing previous days poor quality foods to make stews on a cruise in 90+ degree weather that tastes like left-over bad meals is not the quality expected on a cruise like this. Service was better as far as getting water and coffee though. Our very last night we ate in Chops and it was wonderful to finally have a good dinner. We just cannot afford to do that every night, so we didn't really have a choice but to eat the grub they provided for the first 7 nights. It was so below acceptable standards. I have read other reviews from other guests about the food on this specific sailing who thought it was wonderful, but noticed they may not have had as many sailings with Royal under their belts to compare it to. Lunches were just okay in the Windjammer. Breakfasts were good, just lacking a few things like whipped cream, strawberries, sugar free syrup, etc.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
Bingo, bingo, and more bingo. Loved it, but have never had any sailing with Bingo twice a day every day. The art auctions were also wonderful, but so many of them. It seemed like they were trying to fill time gaps because they didn't do a lot of activities done in the past on other ships, like towel folding demonstrations, egg drop contest, boat making/sailing contests in the pool, scavenger hunts, etc. They did a lot of trivia in the Schooner Lounge but there is so very little seating there compared to other Schooner Lounges that it was very difficult to get and keep a seat. They did have an origami class but you had to pay for it? And unless you broke the rules and put towels out before 7:00 am to save a lounge chair in the shade, forget about it. Those people never came back until late afternoon sometimes. As I said before, we enjoyed Bingo, art auctions were great, and the casino was very fun.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We enjoyed the ice skating show, the final show with the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers (not the first one which was lip synced by the lead mail vocalist, who turned out actually to be a dancer rather than a singer), and especially the performers of the group Impact. The comedian was also good.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Room steward was a 5. Main dining room was a 0. Windjammer was a 3. Lady at entrance for washy washy was a 5. Bars was a 2. Viking Crown Lounge service was a 1. Theater wait staff was a 3.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Tables were not cleared after use by other guests. We sat at a dirty table in the Viking Crown Lounge for 3 1/2 hours and not a single staff member ever came over and asked for our order or picked up our empty glasses, or the ones from the previous guests before we arrived. There were three people working at the time and only a handful of other guests present. They to had to walk up to get their own drinks while the three employees stood talking to each other.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
It was clean and comfy thanks to our stateroom attendant Jamilett.

Ship tip

It's a good ship to stick to a diet.

Ports of call

George Town, Grand Cayman

RC changed our itinerary a few weeks before sailing to add Grand Cayman and drop Bonaire. We were disappointed. We had already been to Grand Cayman. RC would not allow us to rebook another cruise to keep Bonaire unless we paid the full cancellation penalty. There was no way we were feeding their pockets by booking a tour excursion through them, so we booked one ourselves and went to the Turtle Centre which was fabulous. We went after the cruise shore excursions finished. Other than that, there are things for people to do, caves, snorkeling, stingrays, which are all wonderful, but we already did all of that in the past.

Willemstad, Curacao

4 out of 5
We really enjoyed ourselves in Curacao, but in big part because we hired our own private driver and guide for the day so we went all over the island. We explored everywhere for 6 hours and were very safe. No lines, no mass crowds, wonderful.

Oranjestad, Aruba

5 out of 5
Our favorite. We did a private three stop snorkel for just us in the morning and a 6 hour private driver/guide tour for just us the rest of the day. No lines, no mass crowds, absolutely amazing!

They "randomly" tagged us to be inspected by security. It took 45 minutes filling out paperwork and being searched (all of our luggage). They can say it was random but we believe it was because we kept complaining.
