Review summary

Overall I'm glad we did this ship and this itinerary, but it definitely wasn't our favorite cruise.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Embarkation was smooth, efficient, and fairly fast.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We ate in the MDR and while food on some days was good, it wasn't our favorite experience. A little disappointed in the service in the MDR, and very surprised there wasn't a Sommelier in any of the MDR's. The wait staff had to take drink orders (and I assume go pick them up as well), as opposed to a bar staff, which delayed everything else. While food selections were varied, service was slower than on past Princess cruises, and at some meals two different dishes (i.e. soup/salad/appetizers) were brought out at the same time. This was OK if one was a cold dish, but not if they were both hot. Also at a table for two there isn't much extra space, which was awkward. The bars were enjoyable, both the drink choices and the bar staff, we just wish we'd had some type of bar staff in the MDR's

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We enjoyed that some of the fitness classes (yoga, Zumba, etc) were held in Live or The Piazza instead of the gym. It was fun to watch and see what the class entailed, and I think it encouraged others to join in, even those who might not have gone to the gym for classes!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
There was a good selection of shows, comedians, and singers around the ship, so something different for lots of different tastes!

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Overall ship personnel and our room steward were good, but not necessarily staff in the MDR.

Ship tip

We've cruises on multiple cruise lines, including Princess. This was our first time on Discovery Princess, and we hadn't done any of this class of ship before. It was extremely difficult for us to find our way around, and there never seemed to be enough elevators!

Ports of call

San Francisco, California

5 out of 5

Santa Barbara, California

We weren't allowed to disembark on this port because it was a tender port and was windy. Having said that Princess did an excellent job of quickly removing the tour charge and also refunded the port fee automatically, no effort required on our part at all!

Ensenada, Mexico

Thanks for the review. Every cruise can’t be the favorite and each one has issues. The only time I’ve had multiple dishes served at the same time is when I ordered two appetizers/salads etc. They bring out each course at the same time so of course they need to be served at the same time because while you are eating that course, they are preparing the next course. If they had to wait around during each course to bring out each dish separately, it would delay everything after. Then they would hear complaints about slow service.
