Embarkation

3 out of 5
We booked a few pre-cruise nights through Princess at the LAX Marriott, with included transfers from the airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to the ship. Arrival into LAX was easy, and Princess reps met us at baggage claim to lead us to the hotel shuttle. However, the trip from the hotel to the ship was less coordinated. Apparently a miscommunication occurred and no bus was dispatched to the hotel causing everyone at the LAX Marriott to leave for the ship a little over an hour late (we left the hotel at noon, as opposed to 10:45). Our driver was unfamiliar with the port, and dropped the group in the wrong spot, which caused everyone to have to retrieve their own bags and carry them to where the porters were stationed (the transfer was supposed to include luggage transfer directly to the ship —- our bags had all been pre-collected at the hotel). When we arrived shortly before 1:00 p.m., there was definitely a rush at the port, and the porters seemed a bit overwhelmed —- it took about 20-25 minutes to get our bags from the bus to the porters. Embarkation moved more smoothly from that point, including retrieving our medallions at the port (we opted against having them shipped).

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5

Afternoon Tea

4 out of 5

Afternoon tea was very enjoyable, with plentiful tea and scones. We attended on our first sea day, along with several hundred other guests. Based on conversation with others, this was a very highly attended tea, likely because it was too chilly to be on deck (low 50s). Staffing was a little light, but once everyone was seated, service moved quickly through the room and I observed multiple special requests being accommodated (e.g. a different tea, additional scones, etc.) with a smile.

Sabatini's Italian Trattoria

5 out of 5

Very good, and very big meal. Of the three specialty restaurants (Crown Grill, Sur La Mer, Sabatini), this was my favorite —- we ate at all three. The burrata appetizer and lobster tortelloni were excellent. My wife had the osso bucco, which was also excellent. We both had a desert sampler, which included mini portions of the four main deserts.

Main Dining Rooms

3 out of 5

Overall, the food and service are good. We only ate two evening meals at main dining, opting for speciality dining three nights, pizza another night, and one night off ship. We ate brunch/lunch in main dining on one of our sea days (when there was an extended wait at Gigi’s). All meals were good, though no particular dish stands out in my mind. I would happily eat again in main dining on this ship, though definitely appreciate a difference between the main dining and specialty dining options.

Crown Grill

5 out of 5

Very good, and very big meal. Steaks were nicely done, and this was our preferred location to have a surf and turf meal. Service was excellent.

Gigi's Pizzeria

5 out of 5

Excellent pizza, with gluten free crust option. We ate at Gigi’s twice, and would have eaten at Gigi’s a third time if the wait had not been close to an hour. The extended wait was on our second sea day at lunch. Primetime dinner and later evening seatings are much easier to obtain, and I believe Gigi’s is also available for room service order.

Bistro Sur La Mer

4 out of 5

Solid meal. We ate at Sur La Mer the final night of our cruise. Our main dishes (scallops and sea bass) were cooked perfectly. Appetizers were similarly good. The location is a bit odd, as it is in the open on deck seven (Crown Grill and Sabatini are both more privately located). In a certain respect, the menu overlaps Crown Grill, which has a lot of similar seafood options. Both are very good, but I would rate Crown Grill as slightly better overall —- Crown Grill is also a more plentiful meal.

Onboard Activities

Casino

1 out of 5

I do not smoke, and fully appreciate that those who do should have options for smoking on the ship. However, I do not understand why Princess permits smoking in the casino (Celebrity does not). The primary problem with allowing smoking in the casino on Discovery is that the casino is located on deck six, just about the Piazza, and just outside of the sushi bar. When the casino is open, smoke flows throughout these areas and it can become overwhelming, especially to those who are sensitive to smoke. For us, this completely ruled out eating at the sushi bar, which looked good. It also made Bellini’s a bit tough to frequent at times.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
All performers were very good, and played in various locations on the ship throughout the cruise. Performers varied from violinists to jazz piano to mariachi, among others. All were worth listening to, and I happily sat in the Piazza a few afternoons while having a cup of coffee and a snack. Also, for those who enjoy dancing, the Piazza is the place to be and the performers definitely cater to the dancing crowd.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Our 10-year-old son rated Discovery as his favorite at sea kids’ club (we have also cruised RCCL, Celebrity and Disney).

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff and service were great. Our room steward for this cruise was the best room steward we have had to date.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Discovery is a very intelligently designed ship, and overall my favorite ship to date. Venues are plentiful, and placed in such a way that where venues are in the open and next to one another, they don’t interfere with the adjacent venue. My one gripe is that the casino permits smoking, and being centrally located on deck six, the smoke tends to permeate other venues nearby, including the Piazza/International Cafe, the Sushi Bar (we actually avoided the sushi bar because it was right outside of the casino), Bistro Sur La Mer (we sat at the end furthest from the casino when we ate there to avoid the smoke) and Bellinis. I don’t entirely understand why smoking is permitted in the casino, as there are certainly locations nearby that could accommodate open air smoking. The ship is very clean, and well maintained. It still feels new, and will likely continue to feel new for at least a few more years.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Perfect size for our family of three. Closet space and drawer space were plentiful. Bathroom sizing easily accommodated all our toiletries, and the full size shower/tub was a big plus. Our cabin steward was outstanding —— best cabin steward to date.

Ship tip

Plan on eating at one or more of the specialty restaurants, and eating at least one meal at Gigi’s. Review the deck plans before bearding. Deck 7 is the main transit route to move from aft to stern (inside the ship).
