Review summary

Overall, this itinerary was great but could have used some sea days in between the last stretch of port days. Things got a little busy toward the end of the trip but it was still enjoyable. While the Diamond Princess is an older ship, she has a lot of charm and great service. The OceanNow delivery was great, with only a few minor hiccups.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Yokohama port is beautiful. Check in was smooth and efficient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Most of the food was excellent. There were a few nights the menu and dishes weren't as good but overall excellent.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
The Japanese onsen was a unique experience. Other activities were good, as expected from a cruise in this class.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
We went to two shows and they were both cheesy and underwhelming.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Our kid loved going to the kid's club every chance they got.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All staff were friendly and attentive.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship is a bit dated but very clean and well-maintained. The staterooms could use some updating.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
We had issues with the air conditioning and water temperature for the shower. The room was very warm and stuffy at times. When sleeping more than two people, the only bed configuration option is individual twin beds as the extra beds pull down from the ceiling.

Ship tip

Eat at Kai Sushi, great value and the food is the best on the ship.

Ports of call

Yokohama (Tokyo), Japan

5 out of 5
We took the train in to Tokyo from Yokohama. Short walk and super easy to get where you need to go.

Keelung (Taipei), Taiwan

5 out of 5
We had an overnight here and were able to do an excursion around Taipei to get a good overview on the first day. Go to the Keelung night market then use the trains to get to Taipei 101 observatory the next day. Beautiful country.

Ishigaki, Japan

3 out of 5
We found there wasn't a lot to do in this port, outside of nature related excursions. Shopping was limited.

Okinawa

4 out of 5
We could have planned better or used an excursion to have a better day in Okinawa.

HITACHINAKA, JAPAN

4 out of 5
Sushi inside a fish market, fantastic.

Toyama, Japan

5 out of 5
The ship actually docks in Takaoka. We visited the Gold Leaf Museum and street market in Kanazawa using the trains from Takaoka. A great experience.

TSURUGA, FUKUI, JAPAN

5 out of 5
We took the Shinkansen from Tsuruga station to the Takefu Knife Village. When you arrive at the Echizen-Takefu station, visit the Information center for a taxi coupon to get to the knife village for only 1000 Yen round trip.

Sakaiminato, Japan

5 out of 5
The street dedicated to manga artist Mizuki Shigeru was fascinating. The bronze statues were very cool and lots of little shops to visit.

Busan (Pusan), South Korea

5 out of 5
Highly recommend an excursion that includes Spa Land or just visiting Spa Land. The food in Busan at the international market was fantastic.

Kagoshima, Japan

5 out of 5
Good shopping here.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Smooth process and no complaints.
