Catalina is a small place. The reason it was so crowded when you were there is because over 2000 people converged on the little tiny town of Avalon from your cruise ship. On days when no cruise ship is in port, it's pretty sedate and sparsely populated. We visited Catalina on Sapphire Princess a couple of years ago and the crowds WERE pretty crazy, but we did a day trip on the Catalina Flyer a few months ago and the day was very relaxing. Hardly anyone there at all! Fast and attentive service in the restaurants, no lines for renting a golf cart, light traffic on the streets while driving the golf cart, etc. We didn't even want to attempt renting a golf cart the day we were there with the cruise ship. YMMV
