Celebrity Mercury

Sail date: June 27, 2010

Ship: Celebrity Mercury

Cabin type: Inside

Traveled as: Family (young children)

Review summary

The ship was in good condition. The layout was easy to learn and was easy to navigate. The decor was in good condition. The room was in decent condition with some minor wear (stains in the sink, mirror hiding safe did not have a working magnet to keep it closed). The itinerary was nice, although I could skip Icy Strait Point in the future. Crew was generally pleasant and helpful. Food was almost uniformly excellent.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Very high quality shows. We saw the magic show and a musical revue which was excellent.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Our son was very happy most of the time to go to the childrens' program. There were times when he didn't want to leave. In addition, we were able to get last-minute babysitting when our son fell asleep in the evening so that we could attend dinner without him.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Our stateroom attendant was probably the most pleasant person we encountered as he was very personable with our 3 year old child. His name was Salam. Other staff were pleasant and helpful. Since we did a select dining option we did not garner any close relationships with the wait staff and I did find this perhaps detrimental to the service in that the service was less personal. Some might find that a benefit, though.

Ship Quality

Beautiful ship. Layout was easy to navigate. Public areas were well-maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

We had room 8045 which was an inside stateroom on deck 8 which was in the forward part of the ship. I thought this was a good location, although it was above the theatre and thus we could hear the shows occasionally.

Ports of call

Juneau, Alaska

Probably the Mt Roberts Tramway is the "must see" event although I didn't go up because it was so foggy that there would not have been any visibility from the top. The shopping was excellent.
Don't Miss: Jewelry shopping (if you are so inclined).

Ketchikan, Alaska

Again, there were a lot of shopping options. Creek street was a very short walk and there was a funicular up to a lodge with good views of the harbor. Interesting shops. Totem poles were scattered throughout the city.
Don't Miss: Creek street.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

1 out of 5
It was neat to watch the zipline participants, but later people were turned away because it was almost immediately too windy to be safe. There were shops -- basically a tourist trap, however.
Don't Miss: Nothing. Easily could have stayed on the ship and not missed a thing.

Pros: Beautiful ship

Cons: The weather!
