There are a lot of places in this world to cruise. If you want to go to the end of the world this is a good way to do it. It’s a very lonely planet down here so lots of time to reflect on what it must have been like for early explorers.
Embarkation
3 out of 5
Arrived after long overnight flight. Celebrity killed time by taking us to a Hotel in Santiago for a continental breakfast that was pretty bad. A lot of wasted time. Could have done a short tour of Santiago in the same time. After brunch a 1.5 hour bus ride to the port. Fair amount of confusion in the boarding process.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Only used the main dining room and buffet. Celebrity seems pretty rigid on what dining facility you use. They expect you to stay in your lane when it comes to where you sit at dinner. My suggestion is don’t sign up for a specific seating. Just use the open seating restaurant. Room service is quite good also.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
The ship is in very good condition. All of the facilities are first rate
Entertainment
3 out of 5
Average. Tango show was the best.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Cabin stewards, restaurant waiters and servers are fantastic. Don’t pay extra for concierge service as it is pretty bad in my opinion. No value. Excursion staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Can’t say enough good things about the staff that keeps this ship clean and sanitary.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
For a ship on the brink of a re-fit Eclipse is in very good shape. Clean, up to date, great amenities.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
It’s at the very back of the ship so expect a few bumps if it’s rough waters but nothing that would stop us from accepting this cabin again. Clean, comfortable with plenty of storage. We loved it. Good size balcony
Ship tip
On the South America route be prepared to miss a port or two if the weather acts up. Bring warm cloths.
Probably a good idea to stay over another day to get the best experience. You need one day to enjoy the street scene. We did excursions to the Opera House, the famous Cemetary and to the colorful Boca neighborhood. All good things to see. We really enjoyed an excursion to a horse ranch to see the pampas and the Gouchos.
For many on board this was deep down the reason for taking this cruise. Rounding the cape is a sailors dream. Not much to see but something special about the experience. I won’t post a picture because you just have to do it.
The big attraction is the glaciers. We got to them at 4:30 AM. Not exactly an Alaska experience but very nice. The ship gets fairly close but bring a good camera if you can and get on deck early to get a good spot. They are only on one side of the ship.
Penguins are worth it but it’s a long boring bus ride to get there. Once at the rookery there are as many people as penguins at times. You have to stay on a walkway so you will get good photos without a bunch of people in your shots. Learned a lot about these birds. They live a very difficult life in very harsh conditions.
Lots to learn about a country a lot of people are unfamiliar with. It’s an eye opening experience. Very nice country. Take the bus tour and you will learn a lot. The port market is ok but will leave you with an incomplete impression of Uruguay.
Was my personal favorite. It’s the gateway to Antartica and the southernmost city on the planet so that alone is a reason to appreciate it. It’s in a beautiful setting. Not much going on but you will find great subject matter for photos. Take the catamaran ride on the bay and go see the lighthouse at the end of the world.
