This was our first cruise with a family of 5. (Ages 72,47,35,15,6). We paid for FTTF, and pre-booked excursions. We could tell our FTTF purchase was worth it right away. Not only did we just walk right through the terminal but we were seated by 11am to wait to board the ship. Every single person we encountered in the terminal was friendly and seemed happy to be there wishing our family a great trip! We boarded the ship at 11:30 and tried to go to our rooms. We were told they would not be ready until 1:30. So we waited. Finally at 1:30 the halls were open and we made our way to our room to unpack. Immediately pools were full and chairs were claimed. It filled up fast! We explored for a while and eventually found a chair together. Our first sea day we spent mostly outside by the pool. We went to main dining all but one evening. The morning we arrived to Cozumel was a disaster. Getting off the boat took over an hour. We had a prebooked excursion and had to meet at 9:15. We didn’t get off the boat and to the meeting point until 10:33. The whole time I was told they would wait for us, they won’t leave us. Get down there and they indeed had. I went back to the ship just devastated. This is what my 15 year old had been anticipating. I was a basket case when I approached guest services. To my surprise and elated joy, they refunded me immediately, without penalty. I went back down to meet my family and we looked at our remaining options of excursions and chose the push/pull/swim with the dolphins. It wasn’t the adventure we were hoping for but was still a great experience. I wish the facility would offer a way to buy pictures when you get home vs making you make a decision on the spot to spend $200+. I would have loved to have a picture or 2 but not at $80 starting for one. And then to chase me out and offer me a “better deal”. Yea, no. We weren’t too impressed with the “all inclusive lunch buffet”. Very low quality in my opinion. We ate at Three Amigos on the way back to the ship and it was great! After getting more info on our excursion in Progresso, we decided that wasn’t a good fit and asked Carnival to take back our tickets and refund and they did without even a blink. We decided to just get to port, get off the boat and see what is available and decide. It was less stressful that way. We ended up at a resort and it was just the most relaxing best time. We thought Progresso was beautiful and the staff at that resort were just as pleasant and hard working as they could be. We had such a great time. The last sea day was pretty uneventful for us. We were over the pool overcrowding and stayed in and explored events on the ship all day. My opinions and advice: don’t prebook excursions. They were not cheaper by booking in advance, they were the same price as listed in the book. The stress of having to make a time and missing it was too much. It took away from our experience. Have money on your card and just pick something that’s available unless of course it is a limited excursion. The buffet dining and main dining are actually very similar in regards to some “main entrees” and of course desert and apps. Themes were similar. We had late dining and wished that we had an earlier one. 8:15 was late for our family. Get there early for shows and events on the boat. Areas got super crowded and were standing room only. Valor has one thing going for it. The crew and every single person we encountered on staff were pleasant, happy and genuinely acted happy to be there and have their jobs. We loved forming relationships with our steward and dining room staff. When Valor team knew or heard of an issue that we experienced that was in any way negative we were met with the best hospitality (complimentary drink coupons for our wait for excursion credit and error, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries delivered due to our Cozumel debarkation chaos). This is why I rated it a 5. Sure it may be an old ship, and sure we had a lot of “first timer kinks” that we needed to experience but Valor staff made the difference! We are looking into booking another cruise on another ship as well as RC but our first cruise was still an adventure and one we would repeat, just do a little differently. I hope this review helps someone.
