Review summary

I spoke with Carnival Cruise and they said my agent Delta skyline cruises should be helping me liaise with Carnival to get a full credit back, so far I am not getting that help from my agent, Delta Skyline Cruise. They have asked me to deal directly with Carnival and the insurance company. I have written both and I am waiting for a favorable response. I will expect that Delta skyline Cruise will assist to ensure we get a quick and favorable response to my request. My future decision to have anything to do with Carnival Cruise Line will depend on how I am treated so far it has been horrible.

Embarkation

Horrible, horrible and horrible. We arrived and checked in our bags 2 1/2 hours before the cruise was supposed to leave. As we walked towards the check- in we realized that our passports were in one of our checked luggage. As soon as we realized this, we informed the loading staff that our passports were in our checked luggage, they however did not provide us with any assistance. We then, alerted the cruise staff who took us to the priority room and asked for description of our luggage, so that they could attempt to retrieve our luggage so that we could get our passports and board the ship. The staff also asked us multiple questions such as: Are American citizens and did we have American passports to which we answered yes. The carnival staff made us hopeful that we will be able to board the ship that a bystander lady who had some problems asked if she will be allowed on the ship if her travel document were on board. The carnival staff respond that, "Are your travel documents on board?", and she replied, "No". We were kept waiting in that room for 2 hours under the impression that your staff was looking for our luggage however at the last minute, we were informed that our luggage had not made it to our rooms and that we would not be allowed to board the ship. To make matters worse, the Carnival staff did not inform us themselves, they instead introduced us to a new lady, who stated she worked for customs. She was the one that informed us that we could not board due to not having necessary documents (find attached are the documents given to us). As you could imagine, we were extremely upset, distraught and panicked for multiple reasons. Firstly we had planned and looked forward to this family trip for months. Secondly, my husband and my son's medication were in our luggage and we would be without them as our luggage was not returned to us. As you can imagine, we were extremely frustrated because we do not believe any real effort was made to search for our bags and that we were mislead to believe that we were being helped. It was also extremely frustrating to be passed around from the loading crew to the cruise crew to customs all the while being left in the dark about any progress in searching for our luggage. I also do not understand, why we were denied access to the ship especially since during the process of online check in, we provided information you requested about our passport such as: passport number, where it was issued, expiration dates. When we arrived to check in, we all had proof of identification to show the crew staff and customs unfortunately, it was in our checked luggage. However, Carnival had all our passport information on the forms we completed online. It is a shame that our passports where able to make it on the ship but the owners were unable to board. However, we purchased the insurance package to cover any mishaps for the trip. As such, we are requesting either a full refund or credit in the sum of $3236.00 for both bookings numbers 9DL5V0 and 9DL7D2 to be made out to us.

The luggage check in area was chaotic and confusing. The Loaders were scrambling for passengers' luggage that it created confusion and that led to us not removing our passport from the bag. Also, when we realized that our passports were in her bags. They didn't show any concern to help retrieve our bags.

Unfortunately as everyone else has stated, this isn't the cruise lines fault. You can not board without proper documentation. No exceptions. Anytime you're traveling whether air, train, vessel, etc you should never put your important document, valuables, cash, meds in your checked luggage. I hope you purchased third party insurance because Carnival will likely decline your claim as this was your fault.

This experience takes us back... a few years ago we arrived at Tampa and had almost the same problem. We had flown in several days before the cruise and had re-packed believing everything was where it should be. On getting to the security and opening my valuables folder it turned out I only had our laminated photocopy passports, I had left my wife & my passport in a jacket pocket which had been packed and gone off with the porters. We were held in the security office exactly as you were. Fortunately in our case our daughter was with us and she had flown in separate to us and had her passport. She was allowed to board without us and the next 3hrs were spent with her going back and forth to our cabin in the hope the cases would arrive before the ship sailed. The security and customs seemed undecided on whether we would be allowed to board on our copy passports. Fortunately after several hours the lady who was with us in the security office received a call to say our passports had been found and we were allowed to board... I can completely agree it was horrendously stressful, not least because it was our daughter’s very first cruise and for several hours she thought she was going off allow.. we had a great cruise and never again will that mistake happen again... I hope your insurance is able to help you but I worry this isn’t the sort of situation where they might not be on your side... Good Luck

It's also a good idea to keep photocopies of passport and DL when traveling.

I'm sure this is very frustrating but don't blame carnival for your error. Even airlines say to keep important documents and medicine with you NOT checked luggage. Good luck

lab341    6 years ago

You should've done your research, everything you tead about traveling, tells you to keep docs, meds, jewelry ECT in your carry on.

Definitely your responsibility to make sure ALL boarding docs and meds are with you...NOT in checked luggage...sorry for your experience but with close to 3000 passengers and crew to embark, passengers need to be prepared and organized

This is very unfortunate. However, not the fault of Carnival. They tell us to make sure we carry our documents with us to board and any medication in carry on. I am very sorry this happened, it is sickening, but the responsively lies on the guest, not customs or cruise line. A couple thousand bags to go through, many looking a like... I hope your insurance works in this matter. Also, I wonder if you would have booked directly through Carnival if there would have been a difference.

Bottom line: this was your fault. If you have halfway decent trip insurance it might help you out. (And do yourself a favor: purchase insurance independently, not through the cruise line.). And this app has no affiliation with any cruise line; it's a third party marketing outfit that sells stuff.
