Review summary

We enjoy cruising! Two of our cruises have been for less than 7 days -- we prefer the longer cruise as it seems just as you get acclimated, it is time to get off! The Triumph is the smallest ship we have been on but because of school and family, we chose to get out of town while Mardi Gras was carrying on!

Embarkation

We had a group of 8 and most of us breezed through the process until the printer jammed and the staff couldn't restart the printer so we had 2 that could not be issued Sign and Sail Cards. Every person stopped us asking for their sign and sail cards and all of us had to stop and get out of line while a "supervisor" was called over to decide whether or not to allow them to proceed onboard. It took over an hour for us using three different clerks to check us in before finally getting on board where we still had to wait in the Guest Services line.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food had highs and lows. I just can't bring myself to eat veal, rabbit, duck or sushi. The food otherwise was high and low -- I guess it is according to taste. I could have had 5 bowls of Onion Soup but passed on the Ham and Chutney on Gingerbread appetizer. The ham tasted as though it came from the deli from the grocery store with a lot of salt. Of course, anything chocolate was exceptional.

Alchemy Bar

5 out of 5

It was late one evening and I met up with my husband with a plate of pizza before heading into the Piano Bar. I asked if I could get a coke but it WAS a Martini Bar. One of the bartenders actually came out of the bar and went into the Piano Bar and grabbed a Coke for me!!! How special was that????? Thank you!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We enjoyed the trivia games at the capitol lobby but it was just too crowded! Hold them in the Rome Theatre away from the photographers and the London Dining Room as well as the shops, pixels and guest services.

The Fun Shops

5 out of 5

You absolutely do not have to take advantage of the onboard specials or never again see them! As a matter of fact, the Crown was offered again the last day 4 for $75 BUT -- they have signs saying they will price match. Well, just before boarding in Progresso there is a liquor shop that offers a 15 percent off of more than 1 purchase. The ship should already be aware of this and off this already! The last day, as well, I had lost my lipgloss/chapstick and the Clinique sample pack was $31 but actually rang up for $21 as did the Carnival Bag on rolling wheels -- in the beginning was priced at $79 but on the last day it, too, rang up for less at $39!!!!

Spa Carnival

5 out of 5

Rosie called me by name even as I entered the Spa!!! She was a doll and tried her hardest to get me to relax! Even though I clenched my jaw the entire time, I really enjoyed the time she took with me to discuss the use of the cleansers and toners and her "fussing" was cute == I was already aware of my lack of focus on my skin.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The shows were super for the stage size and the level of talent on board was fabulous! I LOVED the Piano Bar with Tony Gentry and closed down my evening 3 nights there!!! The musicians playing at the Capitol Lobby sang some of my most favorite songs by Dan Fogelberg and others. I have to say I was disappointed that the Rome Theatre was not used more often for the trivia shows that were overcrowded at the Capitol Lobby -- even to the extent after the stage show we were hurried out of the theatre so crews could clean up and shut the doors. With a large group, the theatre (in the past) has been a great gathering point for our family groups.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We didn't see too much of Nguymen but I must say that because of the flu epidemic I brought on board Clorox Hand Wipes and before settling I used the wipes on the countertops, the telephone, the remote control and my wipe was clean as a whistle!!!!! Kudos to our Room Steward!! Our dining waiter, DE Oka, was the best waiter I have had on 5 cruises! I got a little sea sick from Cozumel to Progresso over dinner and he took care to see that what I had ordered made its way to me! He knew our names and our drink order by the second day! He was personable, took pride in his service and we loved him! I also booked a facial and Rosie was a real doll! I wish I could go back and get the other items she suggested for me to use!!!! Luck O the Irish!

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Good thing this ship is getting ready for renovations!!! The layout was a cluster-mess with the lobby, shops, dining room, photographers, pixels, guest services, and excursions all in the center of the ship. Many times our toilet would not flush as it should have and it took many flushes to clear it out. The Cleanliness -- as I said before was exceptional.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Our room was very clean and well cared for! I wiped things down when we arrived fearing the flue outbreak but my Clorox Wipe came back spotless!

Ship tip

Shop the shops on the last day for best bargains!

Ports of call

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
I was surprised at the growth of Cozumel since my last trip! Two of us booked an excursion from My United (or TripAdvisor) and we were able to walk to the Hard Rock and we were met as expected! Wild Tours took great care of us and even agreed to drop us off on our return trip at Carlos and Charlie's to meet up with the rest of our family! Taxi cabs were much easier to catch and Puerta Maya has certainly grown in a positive way! You don't really have to go into town to shop anymore and while you are asked to come see their wars, they are not as relentless as in the past. It was a "warm" day in February so I would imagine come August it will be steaming! UGH

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

3 out of 5
We had heard some warnings about getting off in Progresso so we just took an easy day. We took just enough time to go through the 2 dozen or so shops just off the pier. The pier seemed like it is in an iindustrial area so that kind of played a role in our decision, too.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
What a mess? Why say you are going to call by luggage tags and keep moving people around in the Rome Theatre and then abruptly say -- everybody off????? Once off and with our luggage, we were shuttled around like cattle to one spot to another despite the fact that we kept telling everyone we had a shuttle to pick us up and he was right there. He kept moving us further down where there was no more room for people waiting for their rides. So........... getting on and getting off, was frustrating.

I loved my cruise on the Triumph in January 2018. The crew was the best ever and spoiled my dad and me.
