The Sunrise was definitely not what I expected. I was aware that it was an older ship, but was hopeful that the recent refurbishments made it a little more modern. It was not modern at all. The layout was frustrating and confusing. The bathroom decor was an unfortunate blast from the past. There was a sliding door for our bathtub/shower combo, but there was mold along the caulking. The balcony furniture was rusty and so were the aluminum pieces around the window. It was evident that the balcony was spray painted without covering the furniture and there was white paint all over everything. It was so unappealing that we spent very little time on the balcony, which is unfortunate. We made the most of our vacation and we enjoyed ourselves, but I would definitely not choose this ship in the future.
Embarkation
3 out of 5
Embarkation was chaotic. We had priority boarding, but it was not organized very well and no one could hear the announcements to know where to go.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
The food in the MDR was quite disappointing. Most nights it was cold or lukewarm at best, with very little flavor. I enjoyed Fahrenheit 555, Blue Iguana, and Guy’s Burgers. The pizza was also good. The buffet was not impressive and I only ate there once for breakfast.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The activities on this ship were very limited. It was also very crowded, so it was hard to enjoy the few things that were available.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
The shows and the comedian were okay. I’ve only sailed in larger ships, so the performances here of course did not compare to the others.

Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Device overall was exceptional! The waiters in the MDR and Fahrenheit 555 were extremely professional. Our room steward also did a fantastic job! There were a few times at the bar when I felt like I was ignored and we had one negative experience at the pizza place.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
It was evident that the crew was making efforts to keep the ship clean, but there was a weird smell in various places on the ship starting on day two that never went away. Since this ship was recently “refurbished” I had higher expectations for the decor, but it was disappointing. The “updates” gave 90’s vibes.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
The cabin was a great size. It was clean and comfortable, other than the weird smell coming from the bathroom.
Totally agree with your comments. Would never go on this ship again! Layout was horrible. Since trying to add the newer activities it made all the venues smaller.
Carnival is known for its old 80s & 90s decor. They will not change the decor. It's nostalgic to those who have sailed Carnival all these years. On the new ships they have toned down the colors.
