Would have happened in any port. They don't allow you to bring seashells back either.

On my last cruise, my sister bought a souvenir painted coconut as a gift for her friend back home. I asked her today how her friend liked it. She said the coconut shrank and doesn't look good anymore. That was after a year. Something about the moisture inside eventually evaporatesand causes the shrinking. I won't spend my money for one, ever.

Yeah, this is a federal rule at every US port. If you get caught they won't allow it in.

They really aren't supposed to let you but I'm sure they don't catch everyone.

I brought mine back home last year

Any port would have made you throw it away. You can't bring plant matter back into the US.
