Review summary

Loved it, and would do it again. Carnival is awesome. Fellow passengers ruined a very good thing. New Yorkers are incredibly rude. They were actually creative in the ways they found to disparage and show others they have zero desire to improve the lives of anyone except themselves. They yelled. They held up lines for fun. They were careless and treated staff with a great deal of disdain. Common curtesy was not a thing on this boat for the vast majority. They actually enjoyed complaining and arguing. Vacation should be a time that you can chill out!! But not with New Yorkers. You want to go out of any other port to avoid these people. Some have suggested it was kids on summer vacation. However, there were many adults that behaved worse than children on this cruise. I advise you to never sail out of New York. Full stop.

Embarkation

Considerably slower than usual. In retrospect I think this is not because of staff, but because the guests on this boat enjoyed backstabbing, elbowing and being entirely inconsiderate of all others.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Incredibly hard working staff every day, every circumstance, always. If you didn’t find something good to eat or drink you weren’t looking hard enough. Also, the portions seemed small at first. But later I started to appreciate this! Normally I have to loosen a belt notch or two after a cruise, but I think this was a measure to avoid waste. You can always go get seconds. Lots of times by the time you waited in line for a bit, I decided a cup of coffee or tea would suffice. Also did the chefs table, and knowing a thing or two about culinary arts, Agus and his team knocked it out of the park.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Soe was our favorite evening waiter- the kid had hustle and at the appropriate times, got to know us, and we him. I particularly enjoyed a couple of bartenders, as well. All of the staff of the alchemy bar were spectacular. I’ve been behind the rail in my day, and their inventiveness and creativity was not wasted on me. Mirella had an incredible bed side manner, capacity to listen and create anything you wanted and consistently delivered. Besides that, her hands were so beautiful - half of the fun was sitting at the bar and watching drinks be made. Mignon at the steakhouse bar was lovely as well. I so appreciate that staff is placed in a manner that allows guest interaction. Slinging drinks, as many bartenders do, is the furtherest thing from her attentiveness toward us.

Ship tip

I want to be clear - every single one of the complaints I have about this cruise had nothing to do with ANYTHING within Carnival’s control. The passengers were awful. Terrible. Rotten. I will never visit the city of New York again because of the last week. Incredibly rude and hateful. Lots of weed was smoked on the boat. Cutting in line and public disturbances were commonplace. I heard about two instances of theft and I’m sure there were many more. People physically fought in public. Regularly heard people running up and down the hallways yelling for no particular reason at 2am. First I thought there were a lot of British because no one walked on the right side of the hallway. Nope! New Yorkers are just inconsiderate and care about no one else in the universe. No volume control and crass about everything, even in front of kids and in areas intended to be quieter. Ruined the vacation. Ignorance at its finest.

We sailed on the Magic out of Norfolk and it was the same way. Rude people for some reason. Never had a problem going out of Florida. Trying the Magic again in April out of PC.

I am so glad that we were not the only ones that felt this way! We talked to so many other passengers that said the same thing. It was not a Carnival problem, it was the majority of the passengers. One New Yorker said that she was embarrassed that she is from there, that these people are behaving like wild animals. It was so true. Never again!!!

I’m glad you enjoyed the treatment you received from the Carnival Magic crew. We enjoyed a great cruise on the Magic in May out of Port Canaveral. All 8 of our cruises have been out of either Miami or Port Canaveral and have been great. We live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast but the drive or flight has been worth it. We also enjoy the cruise lines private islands. Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review. 😎🚢☀️🩴🏝🪸🐠🌺

Couldn't agree more. Ignore the one comment. Remember, fish don't know they're wet.

Appreciate your feedback. I have noticed that port location makes a difference. If we could drive to a port we’d be more likely to sail from it more often. Then there would be more Coloradans on that ship. I’m sure there are more Texans sailings out of Galveston percentage wise. Not surprised there are more New Yorkers (and probably more from New Jersey as well) sailing from there. Sorry you had unruly fellow passengers. I’ve noticed there are more people (from everywhere) that have forgotten how to behave in public. Hope with time things return to courtesy.

We cruised out of NY once and that was enough for us. Sorry you had to deal with all that.

I get what you are saying. So many from up "there" have migrated down "here" it almost unrecognizable.

I’m British, I wasn’t aware we’re known for walking on the wrong side of the hallway 😄 Also looking forward to my cruise out of New York next year and my stay in New York beforehand! There are rude people and great people everywhere. Some places I’ve been it was more the tourists that were rude, not the locals

So to me, this just screams personal trauma. Don't hold back from cruising from NY, it is amazing folks! I recommend it to everyone

I love how you assume everyone else onboard is a New yorker, even though you're not. It's like saying rude passengers on ships departing from Miami are from Miami.

Other than the New Yorker’s I’m glad you guys enjoyed your cruise. Stay away from the port of New Orleans as well, same crowd, loud, obnoxious, disrespectful, etc.. Sailing from Galveston has always been great!
