Review summary

There should have been some effort on the part of Carnival to do something about the situation by checking old records of me or trying to compensate some of the money or on board credit, especially since I am a repeat and returning customer. I have only used Carnival but this will make me reconsider

Embarkation

1 out of 5
This was my fourth cruise and this time I wasn't allowed to sail with my mom because I didn't have a passport or birth certificate. I used my military I.D. the last three times and didn't have an issue at all.

It clearly states on carnival website you need a picture ID and certified birth certificate or a passport to sail in accordance with the state department! Carnival don't make that rule the customs and border patrol/ state department do.

Rules change, especially concerning travel in and out of the country. I would be willing to bet Carnivals web site is up to date with the latest that customs and TSA has. Therefore it is up to the passenger to read and comply with these rules. Tell me just what more Carnival is suppose to do? I agree with jayReece, just because you got a way with it before doesn't preclude you from it now. So let me get this straight.........you've been on 3 cruises, your in the military and you don't have a passport??!! WTH??!!

It's also the traveler's responsibility to understand required travel documentation before traveling...so what what if he got away with it before, just means he was lucky not to get denied 3 previous times. Why be angry at someone else for enforcing rules that you you are responsible for knowing and trying to get around them?

I wouldn’t say his anger is misdirected if Carnival allowed just his ID 3 previous times.

Ok, so you were/are in the military. I do genuinely thank you for your service. However, being your military, you of all people should know how rules work and why, especially these rules are in place. Again, Carnival doesn't make the rules, but they are bound by law to follow them. I am sorry that you had problems, but you anger at Carnival is misdirected.

If military ID alone is not listed as acceptable proof of citizenship, you should never have expected to cruise with it. It seems like you got lucky previously but this time someone stuck to the rules. Acceptable forms of documentation are clearly stated on their website and in your cruise documents. It makes no sense to be upset at carnival or even customs. The fall out here lies with you.

Be mad at Customs, not Carnival...Carnival doesn't make laws and can't bend because of last year. If they say passports are required, thats what is required. Sorry for your luck but your anger is directed at the wrong entity.

Sorry you missed your, hopefully next time will work out for you. Understand why carnival did not do a refund they sailed without filling your slot, and they list very clearly the documents you need on the website, you need list you passport or birth certificate om the online check-in and it tells you there to bring them, and it is on the cruise documents you print out what you need. Unfortunately Carnival can't do anything as it is US Immigration who sets the rules.
