Review summary

Overall, I enjoyed this trip. The weather was almost too cold to enjoy certain aspects of a cruise (beach, pool, etc), but that wasn't anyone's fault. I would book this trip again.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Fast and easy-peasy!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food was okay, but nothing that impressed me. I felt like I could get the same food experience from any number of chain restaurants.

Mardi Gras Dining Room

4 out of 5

The staff was wonderful. The food was "meh", but better than the buffet. We always seemed to sit down right before the nightly "show". Loud music with the staff poorly dancing along was not what I wished to experience while I ate dinner.

Grand Buffet

3 out of 5

Food was nothing to write home about. Kept me from going hungry.

Guy's Burger Joint

3 out of 5

I've had better burgers. The bacon "patty" was not worth it.

Cafe Des Artistes

2 out of 5

I don't drink coffee, but I do love chai tea lattes. I ordered only one and wished I could have gotten my money back. I didn't pay attention to how they made it, but when I took a sip, it was awful. I realized they (partially) brewed a chai tea bag in hot water before adding hot milk and then directing me to another counter to add my own sweeteners. I make my own chai at home similar to this, but I couldn't make the one on the ship taste good at all. I was not impressed.

BlueIguana Cantina

3 out of 5

I ate here once. While the food was okay, I wouldn't say it was anything special.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
I did very little of the organized activities. What I did participate in (Love & Marriage game, egg drop competition, etc) was fun and what you would expect.

The Fun Shops

2 out of 5

The Shops were cramped in a small area at the front of the ship. They did several drawings here and there was no room to move or breathe (very warm with all the people). I gave up attending any drawings after the first one because of this. Plus, the perfumes were all located in the main shop (which I'm allergic to), so it made it hard to browse for me. The "sales" were also crammed into the small alcove outside the shop (between it and the jewelry shop) and there was no easy way to look at the items being sold without being jostled about. I gave up after just a few minutes.

Photo Gallery

4 out of 5

I really liked how the photo gallery was laid out on this ship. The photos didn't feel like they were crammed together and it was fairly easy to find your photos in a sea of thousands. I thought the photos were slightly higher cost-wise than I thought they should be, but overall, it was a nice experience.

Monte Carlo Casino

2 out of 5

Machines were tight and hardly paid out. Every time I went through there, there was barely anyone in it. Maybe it was fuller later at night?

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff were wonderful and I was happy with their service.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I believe this is an older ship, but it appeared well maintained and there were no issues that I noticed (and I usually notice issues).

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
I shared a room with my mom and the beds were separated. We were both pleasantly surprised at how much room the cabin felt like it had. As she is older (in her 60's), she was concerned about having to step up into the bathroom, but she had no issues. Our only minor complaint was it took us until day 3 to figure out where the a/c controls were (on the ceiling vent!). I wished there had been more convenient storage (around the vanity and inside the bathroom), but overall, it was a nice room.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

4 out of 5
No excursions, but we were happy to see the hanger that used to house the Spruce Goose being used as the cruise ship terminal.

Catalina Island, California

5 out of 5
We went Kayaking and we had a lot of fun! We enjoyed the brief walking tour lead by "Baby Jake" before the kayaking as we learned some of the history of the island as part of the excursion price. We would do this excursion again.

Ensenada, Mexico

5 out of 5
We went surfing and that was an experience! Neither my mom or I were in any shape to surf, but the instructors were patient with us and we have a good time. I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone who is interested.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Leaving the ship was fast and efficient. There was a brief wait (less than 15 minutes) for customs, but overall, it was a fast process.
