Review summary

This was my third cruise to Mexico but my husband's first; I do not plan to do it again. I really feel that this cruise is the Motel 6 of cruises. It was an experience, but I will choose a different destination next time. Overall the cruise was not unpleasant, just not fantastic.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
We completely missed the place to check our bags before entering, in fact several employees saw us with large luggage but said nothing, so we carried our luggage in. This worked out okay since we paid for faster to the fun and our room was ready as soon as we got on the ship. FTTF is absolutely worth it as we passed by hundreds of people in line and went straight to the front.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food is not high quality food. The best food on the ship is Guy's Burgers and the breakfast at Blue Iguana. If you are a drinker, paying for the cheers package is so worth it. You can order a drink every 5 minutes but we still did not reach our limit of 15 per day. We did take advantage of ordering coffee and continental breakfast delivered in the A.M.; loved this.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
We did not see any shows but did go to the 4th of July honoring of service members past and present. It was a nice tribute. We went to the casino a few times and won enough to pay back what we gambled. Did not go in the pool.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Waiters were pleasant and the room steward was nice but the plug in the bathroom did not work. We mentioned it on the first day and again the next but nobody ever came to fix it. Was quite inconvenient blow drying my hair in the room with the other things we had on the desk and in the plug there.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
My observance is that the ship is sufficiently maintained. Everything appeared to be clean and well taken care of. Although, based on what has been heard about cruise ships, I immediately used lysol whips and spray on all surfaces in my room before touching anything.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
The cabin is quite small. We had the twins pushed together as one. There are three closets, two for hanging and another with shelves. Really, I would have preferred more room space and less closet space. Unfortunately, the closets were not big enough to put the suitcases in so we had to be creative with floor space.

Ship tip

Plan for disembarkation before you go. Unless you want to wake early and carry your own bags off, you must put them outside the night before. For disembarkation day, you will still need your essentials for a morning routine so don't pack this in your suitcase but do plan for a bag to carry them off on the last day.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

Catalina Island, California

We rented a golf cart which was fun to drive around at our leisure. We actually did not need the entire two hours though. Not much else to do unless you snorkel take a tour.

Ensenada, Mexico

Nope. This was my third time to La Bufadora. I went because my husband had never gone. I do not feel the need to ever go again. The flea market is not what it used to be. They see the tourist coming a mile away and everything is much more expensive then it should be. What does is mean when you are quoted $80 for a bottle of Tequila and then buy it for $30 because you are willing to walk away? It's an experience I don't need to see again. Also, we booked an excursion through shipmate but could not find the guide to meet up with. After speaking to several people we were taken for a long walk and through much talk finally got on a bus. I don't even know if it was the right one because it did match the name on our printout. I was freaking out but there were other people from the ship on the bus so it worked out ok. Next time we will book any excursions through Carnival.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Once again, faster to the fun allowed us priority which was quite smooth. The most difficult thing is putting your bags out the night before but still keeping the necessities for the morning. You must plan for a bag to carry, essentials for your morning routine.

The 3 and 4 day cruises are for the thousands of college kids in and around Los Angeles. Cheap prices and older ships not made for older crowd.

You get what you pay for on the budget cruises. The ship are old. I have cruising for 30 years and absolutely hate Carnival. Just my 2 cents!

Good news is lots of ships, lots of destinations. Bad news could be limitations if your embarkation port of choice is limited.

I've only been on the 7 day or longer Mexican Riviera cruises. There are tons of options in those ports, I could never get board but it takes some research.
