Review summary

It was indeed experience of a life time; experience that can only be compared to  my first sky-jumping. I would have given the cruise an excellent mark but for the fact that we did not go to Catalina Island owed to what the captain said was bad weather. I am yet to understand why we went to Ensenada in Mexico but could not go to Catalina.

May 2015 we took the inspiration for the 4 night cruise. Even though it wasn't raining, the weather was bad. The day before we embarked, we received an email & phone call telling us to still park in Long Beach, but Carnival would be taking us by bus to embark in San Pedro because the water was so rough. Another ship had to dock in San Diego & the bus brought the passengers to Long Beach.

My in-laws were on Princess last week for Mon-Fri.....they made a stop in San Diego but could not go to Catalina Island or Ensenada. Catalina Island does not have a marina/port with a draft deep enough for a cruise ship. The ship must anchor in the ocean and the only way to get to shore is by tender boat. The tender boat docks beside the cruise ship in the ocean so if the waves are rough, it would be impossible to keep the tender boat motionless to allow passengers to safely transfer from the ship to the tender boat. Ensenada is further south & the water is warmer so the rough waters usually don't get down that far. With El Nino, the bad weather has made it further south. We are leaving this Fri, we'll see if the weather has calmed down.

plus Ensenada has port facilities and Catalina Island is served by Tenders. So you have to transfer to a Tender to get off the ship and in rough sea that can be dangerous.

the answer is because the ship has to visit a foreign port on every cruise it's the law
