Review summary

The cruise overall was a huge disappointment except for Catalina. I definitely won’t be sailing on Carnival again. The only thing that made the trip great was being with the people that went on the trip with me.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Embarkation was good. We didn’t have to wait long to get aboard the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5

Spirit Dining Room

2 out of 5

The food was overall bland and sometimes overcooked. Portion size was uneven during the whole trip. Our waiter was very good though.

Pride Dining Room

1 out of 5

The breakfast we had here was extremely overcooked and bland

Xanadu Aft Lounge

1 out of 5

The comedy performers were subpar, and not particularly funny.

Grand Buffet

2 out of 5

The food was fine. Not great by any means. The desserts were really dry, and the food overall was bland. The atmosphere was very dated.

Mirage Piano Bar

5 out of 5

The piano player was really good! I can’t say anything about the drinks though.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5

Mini Golf

3 out of 5

Average for a shipboard mini golf. Not particularly impressive.

Resort Style Pool

1 out of 5

This is about the shuffle board about the pool. The deck was in bad shape, so shuffle board was a disaster to play.

Serenity

3 out of 5

Nice place to get away from children. The hot tubs were not hot though. Just room temperature.

Photo Gallery

1 out of 5

I didn’t end up purchasing any photos because they never came out good. But the waste of paper printing out all the photos is appalling.

Jogging Track

1 out of 5

Extremely short

El Dorado Casino

1 out of 5

The ventilation from the casino was poor, so the smell of cigarette smoke spread to other parts of the ship in that area.

Entertainment

2 out of 5

Dynasty Main Lounge

1 out of 5

The seat in the balcony were very uncomfortable, and almost every seat in the house has an obstructed view. There were so many pillars in the place blocking your view. The shows were also not particularly great. It wasn’t really a show, it was more just one song after the next. There wasn’t a storyline.

Art Gallery

4 out of 5

The gallery was nice, and the staff was extremely friendly. The art was still the regular tacky art you find on a ship, but it was a nice place to spend time when you look at the ship as a whole.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
The staff was generally really nice. I did have some issues with wait staff not getting my drink when I asked for one if I just was getting a water.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
I want to start off saying the ship was clean. It did need a little maintenance, but overall the ship was in good shape. The problem was the layout was terrible, and the decor was dated and tacky. The forward exterior decks were also not lit at night making them completely pitch black. The lower deck even had a completely unlit stairway.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The size was good for two people, and the cabin was clean. The layout actually made the room feel pretty big too. The cabin felt a little dated though. Everything worked fine. I really don’t like the card access system though since you need to insert the card into the door instead of just being able to tap it.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

5 out of 5
I stayed about the Queen Mary both before and after the cruise. That was a great experience!

Ensenada, Mexico

1 out of 5
Not worth leaving the protected area at the port. There was a beautiful sunset while we were there though.

Catalina Island, California

5 out of 5
Beautiful island!

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Disembarkation was pretty smooth, and we didn’t have to wait too long.

Keep in mind this short cruise does not speak to the quality of the rest of the fleet. We enjoy it for fun, but the main dining room food for example on longer cruises on Carnival is much better!

You aren’t supposed to wander around the forward decks on the dark. They are dark for a reason. The captain and crew are on the bridge in front of the ship and must have visibility ahead and around the ship at all times. There are plenty of well lighted spots on decks for passengers to enjoy.

Too bad you were disappointed with the trip. I’ve actually sailed on the ship several times. Yes it’s a bit outdated but still can’t complain I’m on a cruise ship.

Forward decks below the bridge can never be lit at night due to the need for the officers need to be able to navigate. Most forward lights on the ship are off for the safety of the vessel.
