This was our first ever cruise and it was for our 40th wedding anniversary. We went with friends who were experienced cruisers. We will probably cruise again.

Review summary

We were a little disappointed in our very 1st cruise. We expected more.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
Chaotic, long lines and confusion. You need friendlier people meeting and greeting 1st time cruisers.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The Lido deck buffet dining room was always very hot, humid and steamy. Guys hamburger place should be open in the evening. You need more employees working the pizza place late at night due to the long lines. It closed at 6 pm every night. Hallways in the state room area were often very hot and humid during the day. Waiters, Michael and Michael in the main and formal dining rooms were very good and should be recognized for their exceptional jobs.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Pools were too small and over crowded. Late night adult comedy was horrible. The comedians were very rude and made fun of members of the audience who left the show because of the offensive behavor and language.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Stage shows were good with talented performers. Music in the Atrium, mainly the Violinists were too loud every time they played. They were good, but too loud.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Frederick, our cabin steward was excellent. Most of the other staff were good. Michael and Michael were wonderful waiters in the Meridian dining room. THERE SHOULD BE LOCATIONS ON THE HORIZON THOUGHOUT THE SHIP TO FIND COLD DRINKING WATER BESIDES THE LIDO DECK. It was very inconvenient to have to go the 10th deck to receive ice water. Bars were often too busy to wait on me for just a glass of water. When they did, they expected a tip. It's too bad many bar tenders were too busy to give me water.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
Hallways in the state room areas often smelled like stinky feet. Hallways were very narrow and often wouldn't accommodate two handicapped people meeting in the hall to pass by. As stated before, cold drinking water should be offered throughout the ship, not just on the Lido, 10th deck. The maps located throughout the ship should show the deck numbers, not just the name of the deck. For being a 1st time cruiser, the maps were confusing.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!! Frederick was a fantastic cabin steward.

Ship tip

Don't plan on swimming in the pools on the Horizon. The pools are too small and overcrowded so you're lucky to just get wet.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
Too confusing and complicated figuring out how and when to get off the Horizon. Cookie, the cruise director talked too fast when giving disembarkation instructions over the PA system of the ship. We had to ask a lot of questions to clarify the procedures. Catching our Carnival shuttle to the airport was very confusing and unorganized. The shuttle driver was excellent and worked very hard loading everyone's luggage on to the bus.
