Review summary

This cruise was terrible.  I would not recommend it to anyone.  I have cruised over 10 times and always with Carnival and have never had such a negative cruise experience.  The staff appeared to be mad at something and miserable.  The service was bad, especially at the bars and restaurant on the lido deck.  Most of the time only one side of the bar was open so we had to wait 30 to 45 minutes for servers to bring our drinks.  The one side that was open was in the smoking section so when I went to the bar to try and speed up the process I had to cover my face because I am allergic to cigarette smoke.

Lines to get food took between 20 and 30 minutes. During the time that folks were getting back on boat from ports of call, all but one buffet line was closed. I asked for some ranch dressing and was told rudely that did not have it. Room was not cleaned but two times, had to go get towels myself.  We requested king bed during online check in, was not done.  Had to go request it.  There was trash under the bed when we first got to our room.  Lines at guest services would be long and only one staff person helping folks.  The service in the dining room was slow and food was a disappointment.  You now have to pay a charge to get the good food, like lobster.  The best thing about the cruise on the Elation was the fast debarkation at the end, which I was ready for.  I had bragged on carnival so much from my past experience and planned this trip with four other couples, some who had not cruise before.  I am so embarrassed that they spent their money and vacation time on such poor service and quality.

I have cruised on big and small...  I have loved both.  Wife and I did a B2B on the Elation in February, and have booked the whole family on her in December..

Judging by the positive comments, on the SAME cruise, from new AND experienced cruisers,  I am guessing that the difference is in the people, NOT the ship.

smaller ships usually means shorter vacation.

@loislscott cruising on the older ships is actually better. They're being renovated(specifically the elation while at sea RIGHT NOW). They have better crew, new lines and are getting better ratings than the newer ships. They're more reliable and offer better A/C and more activities in general. Like most people say, it's not about the ships she, it's about the renovations and the experiences after that

Skywatcher, good observation, if you liked the big, busy ships then you probably won't appreciate the little, boring ships. For the few who started on big and it wasn't the calm quiet vacation the were looking for then it may be worth trying the older. One advantage is the older are often cheaper.

I've learned a lot over the past few days reading posts. . . It seems that experiences are positive on older smaller ships for first time cruisers and negative for experienced cruisers on smaller older ships. I take from this observation (stick) with newer bigger ships with more to offer by way of amenities. Thank you everyone!! I started on big ships and will continue. . .

We went in January and had an amazing experience and we are going back this may.

Looks like the other reviews on your same cruise found lots of good things to say about it. Too bad you had a bad experience. When you say room was only cleaned two times do you really mean the steward only came to clean twice or only cleaned to your satisfaction twice?

I'm sorry to hear this. I'm just went in January and had so much fun I booked again in December after the dry dock. Super excited to party with Kevin the CD again!

Well as a long time cruiser - only with Carnival - I can only come up with this....I don't think cruising the older/smaller ships are a good decision. I've only gone up in ships since I first started & never have had the desire to cruise the older ships. I don't know that that has anything to do with your experience - but that would have to have played a big part in it - it shouldn't!!
