Carnival Ecstasy

5 Night Western Caribbean (Galveston Roundtrip)

Sail date: April 04, 2009

Ship: Carnival Ecstasy

Cabin type: Inside

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 15 years ago

Review summary

Outside, the ship is very rusted and outdated looking. Inside is ok - the staterooms are a little worn. Bathrooms had a fishy smell throughout the entire cruise, the only way to not let it permeate your whole stateroom is to keep the bathroom door closed and crank the A/C all the way up every time you leave the room.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Of course the whole trip they are constantly shoving food down your throat. The quality is awesome and you get to try a lot of things you wouldn't normally have at your disposal. They have a 24 hour pizzeria and ice cream/frozen yogurt. Sushi is not so great and a few things were not cooked or tasted right.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
There are a good amount of activities to do on the ship - not a lot of them cater to all ages. The dancers for the shows aren't exactly Las Vegas style quality as most of the time they're off from each other. They have several reoccurring activities, which get old after awhile. DO NOT take the horseback excursion ride in Cozumel. The Mayan "ruins" are actually fake and plastic replicas... unless you really would rather pay $90 to ride on a horse for 2 hours at a slow walk.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Other than one lady that booked us on the wrong excursion, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The only downside is that you get drinks pushed on you every second of the day. When you tell one guy no thanks, the next guy comes a minute later to try to sell you on alcohol or sodas.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Looks like it needs to be renovated. It looks like it was last maintained in the late 80's - which, the ship was built in 1991.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Booked through for an interior stateroom - which is described as two twin beds that can be pushed together to form a queen. When we arrived, we had bunk beds... not exactly the best idea for honeymooners. We slept with our mattresses on the floor and the room steward couldn't find any other frame or anything. Can't upgrade after you get on the ship because they sail completely full. Again, the entire room smells like fish.

Ports of call

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

3 out of 5
The excursion are awesome, and the beaches are pretty decent. Lots of shells and there are free shuttles from the port to downtown.
Don't Miss: $20 massages on the beach and The Mayan Ruins

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5
Again, do not go on the horseback Mayan frontier - it's fake plastic statues and a pile of rocks that they call a temple.
Don't Miss: the beach and dolphin excursion

Pros: food, activities, friendliness of staff

Cons: staterooms, excursions, ship condition

Recommends Carnival Ecstasy? No.
