Review summary

The Breeze was perfect and our cove balcony was a real delight.

Embarkation

I didn’t bring anything on board illegal yet still got flagged by the drug dog. So that was 30+ minutes of wasted time and stressed out my wife a a bit while she waited for me. The people in there going through my stuff were super nice but them asking what every little pill I had in my pill box was a bit much.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

MDR was very hit or miss. It was so bad that we opted for speciality restaurants which I don’t prefer to do. Service was good in MDR, options were varied but the quality just wasn’t there as we’ve experienced in the past. We only did Lido buffet once or twice and it was so-so. Just not our thing. Steakhouse was terrific. Definitely worth the upcharge. Italian restaurant was ok. Don’t think we’d go back. Service in both, particularly in steakhouse, was spectacular. Get the smoked oysters!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Enjoyed all the activities we went to & Lawrence our cruise director kept things fun on the Lido deck. We LOVED the theme nights on Lido, especially the silent white night and the 80s rock and glow. Gym was pretty good & had everything I needed. Enjoyed the karaoke event, went to two productions in the theater which were decent. Love & Marriage show we never miss and this one was hilarious! Skipped bingo for the first time. Didn’t miss it.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
One star removed for piano player in piano bar. I’m a music snob let me start there. Nothing in repertoire post mid-90s. Sad when the best kick you can get out of the crowd is singing along to “My Ding-A-Ling.” A song that hardly anyone under 60 actually knows. Just didn’t connect with audience but Carnival must be desperate for entertainers. The DJ kept dropping a recording of his name into segues between songs—annoying. Enjoyed the steel drum on Lido. The Breeze house band was ok—for 80s night the male lead singer barely knew the lyrics. He needs to get better—again I’m a bit of a music snob. The band behind him was pretty tight.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Overall we were pleased with everyone we met. There are some hard-working humans on board and we appreciate that they were there to make our experience memorable. Alchemy Bar bartenders were really good. Room steward Tri was great. Unobtrusive and everything was cleaned just right.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
For a ship this old we were impressed with how well maintained everything was. She still looks good. We would cruise her again. We didn’t feel the lines were long for too many things. One surprise was how many people did not play in smoke free casino. We hate cigarette smoke but my wife wanted to be around other players so we kept going to regular casino to play table games.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
First time in a cove balcony and we LOVED it! We liked the shade from the lifeboats above and the additional privacy. Will always look at this type room in the future. Size was perfect. Closet space was a bit less than on Celebration but it didn’t hamper us. Just something we noticed. Give the refrigerator time—it will actually cool things. What we didn’t like is the connected door as it seemed like more sound came in from cabin next door. They were also a bit loud but I don’t think that door helped. I will keep an eye out for that on future bookings.

Ship tip

Don’t think twice about sailing this older ship. She’s in good shape. Bring your have fun and don’t worry about what other people think attitude.

Ports of call

Cozumel, Mexico

4 out of 5
Went on excursion called greatest something. It really was fun and a bit strenuous (we’re in 50s in pretty good shape) so we liked that. Got stuck behind a bad accident on highway so our time at the beach was cut short. ATV riding was really exciting along with other activities. Lunch was really tasty. Rodrigo was an excellent guide. They didn’t allow pictures for most of this excursion and that’s because they are trying to sell you photos at the end. The price was ridiculous. It was so high that I didn’t even look at the photos I was so insulted. Not a single person on our bus bought them. This tour needs a new photography company! The ferry we took to the mainland was OK. Noticed that RCC had much nicer vendor for their ferry. Just something I noticed.

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

5 out of 5
This port is a looooong way from town so either cab or excursion is the way to go. We did an excursion to see ruins at Ake and tubing in cenotes. It was one of the best excursions we’ve ever done. Tour guide was great. There also was a photographer on this excursion since water was involved but prices were far more reasonable. A good 2/3 of our tour bought them.

Galveston, Texas

4 out of 5
We’re from South Texas so we are in Galveston from time to time. It’s a fine old sea port.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easiest we’ve ever had but that might also be due to being in a cove balcony room so we only had one floor to navigate on way out. It was easy to take our own luggage off. When we are 10 floor or higher we usually will pick up our bags.
