Review summary

The Breeze is a beautiful ship!  But, our first morning as we were walking around the track, we happened upon the basketball court where a young man (21-24) was on the ground lying into the enclosure net grasping his right leg in obvious pain.  Apparently it was a heated game and he had just gotten hurt as his teammates were just getting to him.  We walked around the track again and once again stopped and his teammates were screaming for medical assistance and a Carnival staff member was just now coming onto the court.  We walked around again twice, before a staff member in a red shirt with a backpack comes sauntering up as this poor man is writhing in severe pain.  As an ex-EMT I stood watching expecting the medical guy to do something all the while the poor mans teammates are the ones holding him up and have his leg propped on one of their backpacks.  By this time, there are several staff members present but not assisting the victim, all talking on radios or phones while the man is sweating and writhing in pain.  We continue to stand observing as are four other people, one who is videotaping the scene and 3 that are in college for physical trainers.  We begin telling the one medical person to splint/stabilize that leg and he tells us he does not have a splint!  The man videoing asks to video my watch and states at this point it has been 35 minutes and no one from Carnival has touched this man!  It is decided that the victim needs to be taken off the court and it is decided that his teammates must carry him off basket style!  They slowly pick him up, trying to hold his leg still with no assistance from Carnival staff and the victim is in severe pain and finally tells them to stop so that he can vomit!!!!  There were several Carnival staff just standing around and the teammates are told to carry the victim down a flight of stairs to a waiting wheelchair!!!!  This is totally absurd and we bystanders begin getting very vocal and I'm screaming that there must be an elevator on that floor since it is a handicapped accessible ship and supplies and equipment must be moved to that deck....and I'm ignored.  Still no doctor........  so the teammates manage to carry this poor man who is writhing in obvious pain down the very narrow and steep stairs and manage to place him in the waiting chair, where the staff still does not assist him and he must ask his teammates to place his leg on the foot pedal!  As an ex-EMT I was flabbergasted at the lack of concern and emergency medical treatment.  I did follow up on his condition the next morning and was told that his leg was broke around the knee area and that it was bad and all that was done was stabilized and told to get an MRI when back home!  This was on day one of a 7 day cruise!!!  Totally unacceptable.

Our cabin steward was horrible. We had to ask for everything. We withdrew his part of the mandatory gratuity.

It is questionable as to if we will sail Carnival again after 6 trips with them.

The first morning at sea would have been about 12-16 hours out of port. When we were on another Carnival Cruise we came across a boat stranded out in the ocean about 20 hours since we had left port. The captain turned the ship around and chose to stay with them several hours till the coast guard arrived to assist them; therefore I don't understand why the ship didn't stop and send for a medical chopper to transport him back to the states. Why have a doctor on board when he doesn't come when called for. He/she should be available for all emergencies and the responders should have better medical training.

Yes it was in port Galveston on Sunday May 21, 2017 as my g-daughter and her girlfriends family were on that ship and it left port at approximately 5:00 pm CDT.

I thought the Breeze was in Galveston on Sundays.

What you expect them to do, turn the ship around and take him to the hospital, fly him a chopper in and take him back to the states next port get in line at the visiting country's emergency room. I have been cruising since 2009 and i know that medical staff on ships is limited. people cruising on the ship probably have more medical knowledge than the staff. Sad generation we are in, the cellphone recording as lawsuit generation. people with the ability to help just sit back and record. Sad.

Just curious as to when this occurred. I was on the Breeze May 7-14. Have been unable to find any other articles on this event. It does concern me.

I am not one to sue, in serious instances, I certainly could have. That aside, I would have taken a chance to have gotten sued. I could not stand there with the know how to help.... not judging, just sad thinking that could be me or my own loved one.

This is so upsetting.

spaceguy85    7 years ago

You really should have helped. It sounds like you know what to do. I would have, even though I not trained. Hope the guy is ok.

Wow this staff could not improvise and use some thing else to stabilize the leg? Unbelievable!!

Good Samaritan Law lol. That was a funny Seinfeld episode.

Wow.....smh

indianabahamamama    7 years ago

With it being out at sea, I'm not sure what the law would be, so that's why I would not have intervened

marcelme    7 years ago

bummer. what ever happened to the good Samaritan cause.

indianabahamamama    7 years ago

You are liable if you help and something goes wrong. Unfortunately in this sue happy day and age you can't afford too

marcelme    7 years ago

as a past EMT, why didn't you offer to help?

indianabahamamama    7 years ago

I'm a RN, and completely agree. I was under the impression that to work on the ship you had to have at least one yr experience in the ER. Where was the nurse and MD? And was the leg set and cast? Pain medication given? If the don't have the facilities onboard, why didn't they helio the man off?
