We were looking forward to our first Princess Cruise but left very disappointed. We have never had a bad cruise experience and never written a bad review but this was just crazy how poor the quality of the food and service were. Only once in 7 days did a wait staff ask if we would like a drink (rarely could you even find staff). Dining room food was mostly bland, tasteless or tough with very few choices available althought the one evening there were ribs as an appie that were very tasty. Breakfast there were only 2 new choices per day and when it was delivered it was stone cold. Not lukewarm. Stone cold. Butter was always hard and toast was always cold. I ordered eggs benny and it was so cold it wasn't edible. Not once did I have a piece of fruit that was ripe. I figured by halfway through the week it would ripen but no, must have been a new batch of unripe fruit arriving mid week. Understandable given that so much needs to be brought on board but dissapointing nonetheless when all you want is a tasty piece of ripened fruit. Tried the movie one night - no staff in site, no cookie, no popcorn. Ship wasn't clean. Staff seemed as tired as the ship. We have done 11 cruises and 10 of them I'd rate at an 8+. This one I eeked out a 2.3 and that was only because our dining room staff were such nice people who worked so hard. We didn't even have the heart to complain about the food. We just left the meals uneaten most evenings. We have friends who rave about Princess so we will chaulk this up to a tired ship and tired crew but we won't risk travelling with this line again.
Embarkation

Very long, too many check points and pieces of paper handed out that were unnecessary, no crew welcoming aboard with a smile or a drink which we always see on Celebrity
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
2 out of 5
Worst food on any cruise ship. Cruised 11 times (Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and Carnival). Very few choices in dining rooms and not one time was the food exceptional or great like it has been with other cruise lines. Bland tasting and lower quality food for sure. Drinks were the same except near the International Café bar where they served very good quality cocktails and had great servers. In the dining room we even had our servers let us know ahead of time that if the steak was tough to let her know and she'd get us another meal. If we wanted a steak worth eating it was a surcharge! Unheard of on Celebrity!
Onboard Activities

Pools were small and crowded. Not a lot of other choices.
Entertainment

So disappointing. The comedian was really funny the first night but boring for the adult show. There were no other performances worth staying for or attending.
Children's Programs

The kids center was directly above the adults only pool at the back of the ship so you could hear the kids playing every time they were there. Not great planning!
Service and Staff

Our waitress Daniela and assistant Bonison were both excellent. 5 stars for both of them. Very nice, efficient, genuine and hard-working. They were the light on the ship and one of the very few positive experiences we had. We have never given a bad review to a ship but this cruiseline and ship were just one disappointment after another. Our room steward was okay but never went above and beyond. Whatever happened to the days when you'd have an animal made out of your towels or anything that made you feel like a special guest. We ran out of moisturising lotion on 2nd day and had to request more because he didn't think to leave any. He forgot after we'd requested but then did put in room later the same day but when they were used up he never replaced any more lotion the rest of the week. We had to ask him halfway through the cruise to change the bedding and the balcony had the same birdcrap on it the entire week. Went to a movie at 9:55pm and stayed until it ended. Was looking forward to popcorn or warm cookies but not once did any server come by with anything. No servers even walked by at all. Not for cookies and not for drink orders. In fact only once in 7 days did we have any server at all come up to us and offer to get us a drink and we had drink packages so tips could have been made all day. We walked to the bars ourselves every time. When I used the app to have a drink brought to me when we were near the spa, the waitress we had took the time to tell us how much work it was getting our drink then stood there for a tip. We ordered 1 more from her and she did the same thing (mentioned how hot the walk was) then stood waiting for a tip. When we went to the bars for drink orders we never had an issue with the staff but there was never a time where any staff offered to help. I've never seen anything like it. On all other cruises there were always smiling staff eager to help in any way.
Ship Quality

Common areas were not clean at all. First day on the ship we spotted 14 pieces of garbage on the ground or in corners in the hallways and on stairwells. We have always noticed how gleaming other ships have been. This ship was very tired with a lot of peeling paint everywhere which is normal given the age of it but there was no excuse for the amount of times there was dirt or garbage on the floors. Even first thing in the morning you'd see the main areas still covered in plastic straw wrappers still not cleaned up from the night before. By mid afternoon on 2 occassions there were no clean towels left at the adult pool. We were there over an hour before seeing a deck hand but thankfully the bartender went to the mid pool and brought us back towels. Layout was broken up similarly to a small house with too many rooms. The ship design was dark with very low ceilings and we found the dining rooms depressing.
Cabin / Stateroom

Bed was comfortable. 2 pillows were feather which we didn't realize until my husband's allergies took over his ability to sleep. Room steward fixed immediately but we were surprised to find feather as so few cruiselines carry them anymore. Room was tired, dated and smaller than other cruiselines we've tried. Smallest shower I've ever seen on a ship and the layout of the bathroom leading into the closet made it even tighter and darker. There was never any dirt in our room and it was cleaned every day so not very fair to steward to complain about cleanliness. I feel like he was worked hard and didn't ever see anyone assisting him. Felt bad for the staff who all seemed overworked. The balcony wasn't clean and the service was typical to a normal hotel not a cruiseline like Princess who consider themselves higher end.
Ship tip
Be prepared to pay $40/day for a cushioned chair in the spa area. It's the only place where shade is available where it is't crowded and the only place you'll find staff who'll wait on you. Get there by 11am on boarding day though or they are sold out. Be prepared to pay $20+ more for a steak worth eating even in the regular dining room. Steak on the menu was chewy and tough but the upcharged steak was a good cut of meat. Same for lobster - only on menu one night without an upcharge. if you want the better hamburger at the pool bar plan on spenind an extra $5. My advice is honestly to find another cruiseline. Never been so disappointed.
If you walk to the very end there is a small area with a few chairs that is lovely and quiet with a good view. We were right in front of a bar that no one used. In fact the staff mostly visited with other staff as there were very few people to serve. Again, not ONCE did those bartenders or any other staff walk around to offer service or drinks. It was get up and get your own service.
last time we went to St. Maarten it was an easy walk into the main beach and shopping area. Now it's a $7 water ferry ride. Island is in a mess after hurricane Irma but that can't be helped. Taxied to the airport bar which was recommended to see the planes lading over the beach. Were with a couple who had done it 10 years ago when there were 100 people at a small bar and sharing a beach. Now there are thousands of people jammed in and it costs you $1.00 to use the washroom. No one over 30 is going to enjoy this money grab.
I also found Caribbean Princess lacking. The worst was the crew for activities etc. Such a self-centered Group. Tired staff all round except for the dining room!
Loved the dining room. The saving grace for this ship is the staff in the dining room.
Not going back on the Caribbean Princess
Wow. I agree with other comments here. I've been on the Caribbean Princess twice and loved it so much we booked a b2b on her in July! Always had great food and service and never an issue with the rooms or cleanliness. Sorry you had such a bad experience. I am really looking forward to sailing on her again.
While the Caribbean was not our best cruise, it was not that bad. Our Eggs Benedict were done good, sauce was not baked on and tasty, and except for one time, yolks were runny. Did two MUTS, cookies and popcorn both times, blankets, etc. Embarkation was fast, we were on before noon, and sitting in the piazza, we did have several offers of drinks. Not sure what you were seeing messy, I would be out at 5:30 am and the staff was finishing cleaning the pool areas and starting to set up. Oh well, while I would not take the Caribbean again, it would be because of the rooms, but that is another story.
So sorry to hear about your experience. It's unfortunate given the incredible positive feedback this ship, crew, and cruise company consistently receive from it's passengers.
I sailed on the Caribbean Princess twice last year (January and august) and didn’t have a single issue! The food was great, the ship was incredibly clean and the staff was amazing! Sorry to hear about your poor experience...I just didn’t see any of that when I sailed.
We were just on her for 2 weeks in August 2018...didn't have any of those issues...staff can only manage so much perhaps the trash on the floor 1st day was from passengers thinking they could not be bothered with using a trashcan ..if pool towels were empty we simply went to the next bin area didn't take much time
