Review summary

DON’T CRUISE WITH PRINCESS!! They have thieves on their staff and do nothing to identify them or terminate them. Your property may be next!

My wife and I embarked on a 10 day cruise on the Caribbean Princess on March 20. 2016. We were very happy with the entire cruise experience – good food, good accommodations and friendly staff. The problem started when we had disembarked and realized a short while later that we had left several zip lock bags of jewelry on the closet shelf of our stateroom. The contents of the bags included watches valued at over $200, James Avery bracelets valued at over $200, and numerous other necklaces bracelets and earrings. The most important valuable piece was a diamond ring valued at $4900.

We immediately contacted Princess to tell them about our loss and they advised us that we would be required to submit a lost and found form and that it would be 4-6 weeks until our goods would be returned. We immediately submitted the form along with the appraisal for the ring and waited impatiently for the response. On May 10, 2016 we were advised by email that Princess had recovered our missing jewelry. They sent a picture of the recovered items and SURPISE! Everything was there except for the $4900 ring.

A subsequent phone call to Princess Cruise Lines yielded no satisfaction. I asked if they were going to investigate to see who the thief was. Response was a curt “No”. I asked if there was a documented chain of custody for our items.  Again “No”.  I asked if there would be any compensation for our loss since it was obviously stolen by one of their employees. Once again “No”.

The rude lady that I spoke with at their lost and found  department was very insistent that Princess is not responsible for loss.  I understand that position, but I at least expected them to give a damn, take corrective action within their company, and maybe offer some level of compensation in cruise credit. THEY DON’T CARE!

You can be assured we will NEVER cruise with Princess again, and I would advise you to avoid them along with ALL of the “Carnival Group” which includes Carnival, Cunard, Seabourn, Holland America, Costa, Aida.

Thanks for sharing your cruise.

Always double check everything before you leave the ship! Don't bring valuables that are not insured!

dengage    8 years ago

Please forgive the grammer, spell check stepped in and I missed the mistakes before hitting the post button.😕

Yeah, I have to agree with the treatment of staff. My husband and I don't leave a mess for them either. They definitely work for pennies.....I began to ask what some of them make.....we found out that the room steward makes only $900-1,300 a month. Even the nicer jobs......helping with cruise tour information....etc....only make about 1,400 a month. We are appalled to hear them tell us that many people don't tip at all....or they leave $20 for a 14 day cruise. That is so wrong. Of all the cruise lines we have experienced.....we think the Princess staff really pays attention to details and seem to be some of the friendliest hardworking honest folks.

dengage    8 years ago

I fully agreement with your comments, my wife and I look after our steward financial and in the cabin we make his or her life as easy as possible also our waiters, when we leave the ship we strip the linen off of the bed and bid them a fond good bye, I'm excited military chef and know what it's like to be appreciated. 😊

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

Your welcome. ..we just have so much ugly in the world I think we can all get along especially when talking of such a wonderful peaceful and fun event as cruising where people from all over the world come together to create wonderful times for us on board all while they are so far from their families and friends and just trying to make a living for them. I mean people in my own office cant even come together as a team but yet such a diverse group of people on board work together to make our cruise time wonderful and the thanks they get is some treat them like slaves and accuse them if stealing. ..i am sometimes ashamed of us as humans when i see the way some treat and speak to the staff...as if the staff were stupid and have no feelings. You get more with honey than vinegar and I treat the staff and others as I myself would want to be treated. .just saying.

dengage    8 years ago

Hi cruzrbachoua THANK YOU for seeing my post the way you have, I really am not the type of person I'm being painted, I will do anything to help anyone with advice or anything helpful. And you are right it was not my end game. And I do agree we should both calm down I didn't go looking for a verbal fight, both my wife and I enjoy cruising and have made a lot of friends from all over the world and especially the US of A. 😊

dolds67    8 years ago

Sorry....I didn't see the posts the same as you. . Since he claims he isn't posting anymore....that should be the end of that. I have a right to my opinion just as he has a right to his. You seem to have a sweet attitude! Have a great rest of the day!

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

I get that i am just saying we all should calm down. ..especially since he originally agreed with you and made a simple comment about his cruising history. ..i didn't see it as throwing it in anyones face or trying to rub it in i just don't think that was his end game

dolds67    8 years ago

@cruzbachoua......yes, I can see that side of it and I'm always interested in places I haven't been like the orient. But have you say next to someone at dinner and have them monopolize the entire conversation regarding every tid bit cruise they have been on? Another example is listening to couples out brag each other. That is what I'm talking about. We have seen a couple of folks get their feelings hurt....because this one cruise is all they can afford. What I'm referencing......is a whole other ball game than what you are talking about. I just think it is about being able to gauge others around you.....that maybe they don't want to hear all of that.

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

Ok, i think we all should calm down. I personally don't see it as bragging. ..i mean we all want companies that have x amount of years experience in this or that and we see it as someone who is well versed and wise in that arena...so why is it bad when someone says they have been on x amount of cruises to me that means they have experience and wisdom that I would love to delve into and learn all that they have learned in their many trips...just as i respect someone who is older and not think of it as bragging cause they say they have been around this many years. ..

dolds67    8 years ago

Let's see how long you can go without posting. Men like you can never walk away.....you must always feel like you have the last word. As far as your body parts are concerned....that is between you and the Lord.

dolds67    8 years ago

Those who brag about things.....only do so because they feel inferior. I too can post how I feel about you.

dengage    8 years ago

And as for class you have no idea !!!

dengage    8 years ago

kflast you are so right, the first thing we do is set the code for the safe, and put all valuable things in it until needed.

kflast    8 years ago

That is why they put a SAFE in every room. We always use it!!

dengage    8 years ago

D old so 7 ....... If you don't like what I put up don't read it my wife and I have worked all our lives to do this so butt out. And I will continue to add my comments to this site, and this world isn't yours either so do one.

dolds67    8 years ago

dengage....did it ever occur to you....that some people can only afford one cruise in their life or that their health crisis unlike your own, also keeps them from cruising?? I am happy for you that despite your health you can do so much .....but it is crass to brag about how many cruises you have been on. I have seen people's feelings be hurt by the pettiness of some folks needing the attention of the accounting of every cruise they have been on without promoting. The color of your key card....speaks for itself....one need not brag. Of course their are some people who only care about me myself and I. Please try to remember....the world isn't just about YOU!

dolds67    8 years ago

Most people are decent and good! My only problem with investigating crew members.....is the fact that....not every passenger is honest either.

abster2103    8 years ago

Running late one time for dinner kids being kids etc I inadvertently left the safe open with about 500 cash and some wedding bands and went to dinner. Came back and realized it and found every single dollar still there and the jewelry. Steward had been in the room for nightly turndown and had to have noticed the open safe because linens were stored there. Anyone can always be a thief but I have found most of the stewards to be honest. Still always use the safe and don't take anything that I am not willing to accept as lost. But if the posters account of princesses response is accurate I would be disappointed. While as previously mentioned the cruise lines liability is limited I would expect an investigation to determine if the crew members are involved because you would not want to have a dishonest employees working on the ship

luvcruzin24    8 years ago

The wife leaves the "good stuff" at home and always brings her Avon jewelery. I can't tell you how many times she was asked where she bought her pretty jewelery!! Hey, it serves the purpose!!lol

partybarb    8 years ago

Your fault. Should have used your safe. And a $5000 ring on a cruise???? Not sure I believe that so why would they. Tap your homeowners.

dengage    8 years ago

I fully agree with you dolds67 my wife and I started cruising 35 months ago for our 40th wedding anniversary and enjoyed it so much at the end of May we start our 14th cruise and have 3 more booked for this year, we have both had cancer first me with pancreatic cancer then my wife with breast cancer,so we decided to make the most of what we enjoy, but going back to the main subject always do a complete sweep of your cabin before you leave, then if you have left anything behind you only have your self to blame.

dolds67    8 years ago

tillybobs....you are correct! My husband and I grow weary of the "I have been on more cruises than you....nanny, nanny.....boo boo!" or our favorite too is the pretentious folks.....when we are looking at the art....who want to tell us all the pieces they bought and how much they cost then inquire how much have we purchased. We like to ask where have you been on your cruises or other vacations....if the subject comes up. If you have been blessed...that is great....but no need to run others noses in it.

tillybobs    8 years ago

Theirs a lot of two bob millionaires on these cruises ! Buying fave rolex's to take to make out tbeyve the money ! Just look around and see for yourselves lol

dengage    8 years ago

Good idea

banaford    8 years ago

Dolds67..love the dry erase marker idea!

dolds67    8 years ago

While I feel bad for your loss....you can't expect princess to replace the ring that YOU left. Once you check out of the cabin....whatever you left behind was at your own risk. My wedding ring, with my everyday ring and a simple strand of MM pearls is over $10,000. I have never once had any problems with the staff stealing. My husband and I bring a dry erase marker. We use the mirror to list all important things to not forget. As we pack them....they are erased off the mirror. Dry erase markers also help us list the days activities we want to do....and is good for leaving each other messages on where we are and what time we will be back if we seperate. Then after all luggage is out of the room....the morning of disembarkation......My husband searches the room for anything left.....then I search the room...we do this while the other waits. We have cruised other lines and Princess is one of the best value for the money. Next time you cruise or vacation....work out a system....as suggested by many on this thread.....so that you double check your room. The best of luck to you.

kknorr0320    8 years ago

Yeah I mean there's not much the cruiseline can do. Unless someone saw it happen there's no way to know if staff took it, a guest took it, it was lost in port or never on the ship.

mmck    8 years ago

When you leave your room to disembark the room stewards open the doors and there left open until there finished. Any guest or staff could have walked in and took your things. We have checked out rooms that were empty just to see if we liked the room. You shouldn't blame staff unless you know for sure that is was a staff member.

tillybobs    8 years ago

Same here...never ever ever had a problem! Your full for taking an expensive ring on a cruise ! Why do it ? Maybe to show off

Gigigagnon    8 years ago

Why soul take a ring valued so much?? I would not have left a ring in the stateroom!

luvcruzin24    8 years ago

Ditto about not putting it the safe or even having it on the cruise to start with,(the ring). We had a camcorder stolen on a RC ship, but it was entirely my fault. Lock your stuff up. I do now!!

dengage    8 years ago

There is one way of proving you had the ring, with photos taken on board if you have any ?

ccicchetti    8 years ago

It shouldn't have been left behind. My rule is always to do a thorough sweep of the room and the shelves and safe bc I keep any valuables in the safe. It is so important to keep track of your stuff but I would never bring something so valuable onboard. You really have no way of proving you ever had it to begin with. Princess is not responsible for your personal items - you are.

michala    8 years ago

I also have been on many princess cruises and never had a problem i even leave my jewellery out on the table and never had a problem but if mine did get stolen it would be my fault anyway for not putting in the safe it's not worth there job to steel sorry you have found this but you can not be sure it was defo a member of staff .

bethbergercaldwell    8 years ago

I have been on over 60 cruises. Most of them are Princess. I have never had anything taken. In fact we changed cabins. I did not realize that I left a very expensive item in the cabin and the room steward brought it to my new cabin.

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

Princess has safes in the closet area uses a 4 dig code. .all jewelry and cash and passport go in there soon as we can

dengage    8 years ago

We have only been cruising just under 3 years, and from the first cruise we always do a complete cabin sweep to make sure we haven't left anything behind.

dengage    8 years ago

I agree with all the comments, my wife and I take jewellery with us, all is kept in the safe, and on disembarkation we do a complete walk through the cabin TWICE or more to ensure we have left nothing. You only have your selves to blame!

newtraveler    8 years ago

They don't have safes on Princess? All my jewelry- not even that expensive but things I love- and cash- goes into the safe.

kknorr0320    8 years ago

Yeah I don't take anything expensive and I keep it in a jewelry case in the safe so when I clean that out I don't forget it.

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

Crusintim I am the same way..have a check list for disembarking that I pull out

debbmike    8 years ago

cruzrbachoua is correct. Carnival can't be expected to fire every employee that was in the room. It may not have even been an employee that stole it.

CrusinTim    8 years ago

My OCD when cruising is that before we leave the cabin, we do a COMPLETE walk through, looking in EVERY nook & cranny (shelves, safe, drawers, bathroom etc.) to make sure we aren't leaving anything behind. It takes all of an extra 5 minutes before we vacate the cabin. Sorry this happened to you but you need to hold some responsibility for leaving it behind in the first place. If your going to take valuables in that amount with you, make sure you don't leave them behind. I hope you had the items insured. Just my opinion...

cruzrbachoua    8 years ago

How do you know it was the staff could have been the next people that got the cabin...

sloopjohnb53    8 years ago

It's for sure I wouldn't take a five thousand dollar ring on a cruise. It would be at home in the safe.

banaford    8 years ago

I think ALL cruiselines have this policy. Sorry you had this experience. One reason I don't bring jewelry.
