Avalon delivers a consistent elegant experience with top notch service and food. Cruise directors need to be a bit more "gentle" to customers rather than try to control our experiences. Our previous cruise director a few years ago on our "Romantic Reine" trip was exactly the right person for the job. Accommodating and empathetic to our needs while being able to turn on a dime when ever there was a glitch in the itinerary.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
I love being able to walk onboard with my luggage in hand at whatever time I chose.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
The food was great and the optional salmon dinner made dining very easy and enjoyable.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
This was not meant to be an onboard activity cruise, so I was happy that there were many places to just curl up and read a book or enjoy a cocktail while watching the world slowly go by.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The three ladies who did a retro "Andrews Sisters" act was fabulous! The cookie lecture was pretty boring but the cookies were good - she needs to work on her presentation to liven things up.
Children's Programs
This was mainly a mature adult cruise.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
The cruise director was a bit too Type A for me. I wanted him to listen to me rather than jump into his standard prepared answers. Other than that, the waiters were very attentive, even though some of our orders got lost in translation. A Caesar salad is NOT a shrimp cocktail.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
The ship was gorgeous, as expected. The rooms are well designed for efficiency and customer enjoyment. I love that the bed faces out towards the view out the window.
Cabin / Stateroom

Ship tip
I think the third deck is the nicest and most conveniently located for everything and a better view.
The river was too low to navigate there. They offered a bus trip to Nuremberg, but I think we had a better time strolling through the streets of Regensburg for an additional day.
It was easy to grab out bags and head out at our leisure. They should have offered breakfast longer for those who didn't need to leave until later. Or at the least, they should have made it known that it would close at 8:30, not 9:00.
