Review summary

The cloudy weather and rough seas caused us to stay inside, we had severe motion sickness on our last day and others must have as well because barf bags were made available near the elevator lobbies. Beds were extremely uncomfortable and 5 days later my body is still achy! Food wasn't that great and outside of late night shows (the best part of our cruise), there really wasn't much to do inside during the day but stay in bed. We were just excited to leave the ship as we were to get on - this was our first and last cruise.

In our experience, Sherry2017, it was because the weather was so bad (storms and water spouts), closing all upper decks and activities, so people were driven into the other indoor activities. All the "to do" was being done already. Lines were ridiculous. The only reason we had anything to do at all was because our suite Royal class granted us priority in some venues. Otherwise, we just spent a lot of time in our room. Even the balcony never got used because it was just too windy. I think Anthem would be a great ship porting out of a southern port instead of New Jersey. It isn't stable enough to handle the unpredictable Atlantic waters and doesn't have enough indoor capacity for all guests in the event of upper deck closures.

Are you actually talking about Anthem? I just finished a 9 day cruise on Anthem and there was so much to do on the ship that there was no to do it all. My family was split in 4 different rooms and found all our beds comfortable. Also, since ships can sway in the Mother Nature provided weather, I wear the TRANSDERM-SCOP patch which effectively protects against motion sickness. Hope you have a better experience next time.

No more egg crate mattresses- they could not be cleaned properly. I ask for 2 extra duvets-that works!! Also going out of New Jersey is great for sea days- but we always hit rough seas. Take lots of ginger-?tea, gum, candy. Also use Sea Bands. Read the Bonine and acupuncture also work. Acupuncture-,first treatment should be before you board- then another as soon as you board.

In the UK a lot of us like to sail from Southampton to avoid the hassle of airports and accept that the convenience means that we may have to run the lottery of getting across the Bay of Biscay without bad weather. I am sure that this is also the case in the US with a lot of people choosing to avoid travelling down to Florida. If you get sea sick, take tablets and it will soon go away. We found there was plenty to do under cover on the Anthem like the solarium, sea plex, 270 lounge and the main drawback we found on this ship was the lack of outside space on hot days. As for the beds you can't please everyone, some people like a hard mattress, some don't. If it was that uncomfortable why stay in bed all day????? How was the food not great, we found plenty of choice and to be honest what is not to like about not having to cook, shop, clean dishes for the length of your cruise.

Don't give up based on that experience. We shared your experience on Anthem, but it was our 5th cruise, with all the others being wonderful, so we weren't deterred. Anthem isn't the best ship, anyway, but the itinerary increases chances of inclement weather and the ship just doesn't offer much if you can't go on deck. Try another ship! We mentioned our concerns to RCI and they comped us a percentage of what we spent on the Anthem cruise to go on another ship, so we are going in 200 days on Navigator OTS for cruise #6! I love RCI!

also told egg crates not available. room steward put an extra duvet under bottom sheet and it really helped. why do you think it is a fake post?

Good luck on the egg crate mattresses. we've been told the last two cruises that they are no longer available and RCCL did away with them fleet wide. Just got off Anthem, I was more comfortable than at home and my DW was less comfortable than at home. Previous no egg crate cruise was in December.

You are welcome!

Yay! Thanks for the tip!

It is a foam mattress that is shaped kind of like eggcrates with little pockets. It is over an inch thick and very soft to sleep on.

My husband said the same thing in 1986 on a Bermuda cruise NO MORE CRUISING That changed 17 years later and we cruised 3 to 6 times a year until he became ill.

leftydread    7 years ago

Didn't know there was a non drowsy so thanks! And what's an egg crate mattress?😁

cece1951    7 years ago

And ALWAYS bring Dramamine 2 non drowsy!

cece1951    7 years ago

Next time request an egg crate mattress either from the reservation dept. before the cruise or from your steward when you board. Makes all the difference!

Don't give up on cruising. You just have to find the right ship for you. I highly recommend researching a ship before you book. Also, consider another cruise line. The Anthem during the day is more of a laid back take it easy until you get to port ship. There are activities during the day.... I see what they offered wasn't 4 you. As someone who has been cruising for over twenty years there is a learning curve, for example if you want a younger crowd you would want to sail in the summer and on certain lines. Don't give up on cruising.

Please don't give up on cruising based on Anthem of the Seas. My husband and I are seasoned cruisers and this is our first RCCL cruise. There are some positives and negatives for each line. The beds on Anthem are very uncomfortable. I keep saying only 4 more nights! We like Carnival beds and planned activities and find ourselves stressed by not being able to do it all. Activities on Anthem are pretty non existent. Try another cruise line before you give up on cruises!
