Review summary

Not the best cruise I've ever taken as you can judge from my comments, but it was still a nice getaway.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Unbeknownst to many cruisers, Royal Caribbean no longer allows extension cords or surge strips. Many were confiscated and then returned in Bayonne.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
In the main dining room, the waiters who were seating people did not know where the table numbers were, which resulted in allot of people being led around in circles before getting to their table. Worst ceasar salad ever, with too much dressing, but the rest of the food was good and the service excellent. Buffet closed too much between meals. Why not just close down one side at a time to turnover for the next service like on other ships?

Windjammer Marketplace

4 out of 5

Just one word of warning. Avoid the Windjammer whenever there's an emergency drill for the crew, which usually takes place when the ship is in port and the majority of the ships guests are ashore. When the drill starts, the majority of the crew must participate. This includes the waite and bar staff. I went to the Windjammer during the drill, there were no clean utensils or napkins available. Many of the food items were in need of restock. The head waiter was apologizing to guests as many of his workers had to leave the Windjammer to participate in the drill.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Many people participated in the activities, whether indoors or outdoors. I saw allot of excellent sportsmanship amongst the guests participating.

Casino Royale

2 out of 5

Very different rules compared to land based casinos. Blackjack only paid 6-5 vs 3-2? The house edge is already kicking the players butt at 3-2, why change it to 6-5 and rub salt in the wound?? At craps, they called "no roll" if both dice did not touch the wall at the opposite end of the table!! This angered many players when a good number rolled, but only one dice bounced off the far wall, and nobody was paid!! On the flip side, there were several occasions where a shooter "7'd out", with only one dice reaching the wall, and the dealers tried to pick up the money instead of calling "no roll". We had to get the boxman to reverse the ruling each time!! When the players have to constantly watch the dealers and the box to follow their special rules, you get the feeling that you're playing in crooked game! Casino bar service the first two nights was horrible!! Waiters would simply walk around without saying a word. This changed by the third night after a number of guests complained and the service improved. Again, something else that should not have been necessary!!

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Room steward never introduced himself to me and I didn't even meet him until the end of the second day. I only knew his name because he left his card in my room. I told him about water not draining from the bathroom sink unless you pulled up the stopper, but this was not fixed. Waite staff in every restaurant, the assistant cruise directors and the entire casino staff, they were awesome - top marks!!

Ship Quality

No complaints here! Ship looked to be in very good condition, having recently been renovated.

Ship tip

Leave your extension cords and surge strips at home. Mine was confiscated in San Juan. Some BS story about a voltage incompatibility. When I got off the ship and went to the room where one picks up prohibited items, there was a table full of surge protectors. Royal needs to do a better job about keeping guests informed about what's prohibited. The prohibited items list does include "extension cords". Would it take much effort to add Surge Strips?

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

3 out of 5
Open air terminal with no air conditioning. Do not embark/disembark at this port expecting it to be like Port Everglades! :)

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

The usual trip to Maho Beach is always worth it. $17, I think, per person, for the round trip here. You pay at the taxi stand and they give you a colored wrist band to wear.

Cape Liberty (Bayonne), New Jersey

5 out of 5
Fast and efficient disembark. Was supposed to disembark at 955am. By 820am, all groups had been called. No customs form was needed!! Just your passport, unless you were bringing in excess amounts of tobacco, alcohol or money.
