One Night Cruise to Nowhere - Had a Blast by NYMom

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

Found a last minute deal online - $22/pp. Couldn't pass it up (they hit you with the fees though) So, we upgraded to a mini suite with balcony for $69/pp, still totally worth it. Room was spacious - great bathroom.

I've only been on Carnival cruises to compare, so here goes.

Staff was very friendly. Although I didn't see much of them. But it's the dead of winter in NYC, so don't think the ship was filled to capacity. I'm not a fan of tons of little kids running around, so glad to see for a 1 night cruise, that nearly everyone kept the kids at home. My husband and I used this night as a date night, so did most others I guess. A few teens celebrating birthdays, but all in all - a very tame group of passengers.

Ship isn't nearly as over the top as Carnival in its decor. It seemed much smaller and cozier, but that didn't bother me at all. Entertainment was WAY better on the Gem - we really enjoyed the shows and the club was jumping! Greast music, great crowd - yound and old. Now, that could have also been because it was a 1 nighter, so everyone made sure they enjoyed what they could for the night.

Drinks in the bars were way affordable - the Bliss Lounge is ultra cute, set up with beds and counches all around instead of chairs and booths. Very sexy. Had a small area to bowl which was nice. Again, I think the smaller crowds everywhere just made it enjoyable.

Here's the kicker - the food. It was awful. Like not just cooking for big crowds awful - like really awful. It had to be some of the worst food I've ever had anywhere, cruising aside. It wasn't just bland - everything was overcooked, underseasoned, and served cold. The buffet is TINY, without many choices and none if it seemed like it was even heated. Food one of the dining rooms was inedible, we got up and left in the middle of it hoping to find something better elsewhere. Granted we didn't try any of the restaurants you pay for -- but I almost get the impression they make the food in the dining room and buffets so bad so that you're almost forced to pay to eat in one of the "fine dining" restaurants (of which there are a whopping 6 onboard.)

So - go to have a great time with a significant other or group of friends. DON'T go if you're looking for a fine dining experience

Tampa Cruise to Nowhere by jeffrey813

Everything aboard met my expectations.  Staff was excellent in service and friendliness.  Very serious problems with the quality of food especially the food served on the buffets.  Otherwise had a great adventure with many friends.

Cruise to nowhere by patsey

Very good name for this cruise. Nothing about it was nice. I reserved a suite, which turned out to be nothing more than a balcony room. We spent the entire weekend with no room service. We couldn't even get our ice bucket filled. We never saw our room stewart, until we had to demand clean towels ,on Saturday , for our room. We never ate in a dining room , because Norwegian has what is known as free style cruising. We had to wait for at least an hour to have dinner. We chose the buffet , which was the worse we ever experienced on any cruise. Outside of all that , I'm grateful the cruise was only for 2 nights. Probably never cruise on NCL again.

Dissapointed! by Issy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Jewel / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

After sailing in 2012 on a one night getaway cruise to Nowhere having a great time for entertainment was great, adult games, music and dancing. So in 2013 we booked a 2 night getaway and this was dissapointing... comedian was not so great perhaps needs to retie himself. The Bingo event were very disorgaized.. white hot party... the staff maybe stayed out with the crowd maybe 15 min. what was with all that hype?? They ran around with feathered wings??? And stop with the washie washie.... please we are adults here affording a weekend getaway not to be told to wash our hands... I think I will go back to carnival for a weeked getaway.... and stay with princess or royal caribbean for the longer cruise vacations. Thumbs Down!

Norwegian Blunder by AREALNEWYORKER

The experience was ok not great. We had a balcony stateroom but the glass on the balcony was filthy! We couldn't even sit on the balcony and look out because the glass was so dirty. We also made reservations to one of the "specialty " restaurants and the service was poor. We waited a whole hour after being seated to get our meals which weren't really that great!

Been on Other Cruises - But NCL are a Great Deal by viscopj

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Jewel / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

We have sailed on several different cruise lines over many years and most recently sailed on NCL for the last three cruises - We have already planned another one on the Breakaway. We have sailed on three overnight cruises from NYC, to the Bahamas for 6 days from NYC and will be sailing from NY to Bermuda on NCL's newest Ship The Breakaway. NCL cruises are a very good deal economically - reasonable food - better food in the pay more restaurants (which we do) Fun entertainment pretty good staterooms. But sailing from NY makes it possible to take more cruises. It is pretty easy to stick in a quick getaway the is more fun and less expensive than a dinner show and hotel in NY.Its just a No-Brainer. If you haven't sailed from NY - its a breeze - eliminates all air related and air-transfer issues like where the heck in my luggage, etc. Not perfect but overall a great deal for fun. Only negative - not enough on board interactive fun games.

Cruising for fun by happycruiser572

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Jewel / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

My choice of the NCL Jewel cruise ship , is because it leaves from NYC and you are greeted by everyone who works on the ship. They treat you with respect, courtesy, and try to accommodate you every way they can . The entertainment, the great choice of dining areas, the cleanliness of the ship, and the many, many passengers I meet, talking with the crew, and learning about where they are from and about their countries, people from all walks of life ,all just enjoying their selves no worries, no cares. All under one roof.

Registration and dinner by Banigan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Jewel / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

Registering and getting on the boat took over an hour boarding 2 boats from the same line. Dinner in specialty restaurant very poor food cold finally left with out eating spoke to manager offered to bring out new dishes but by that time we had waited over 45 minutes. When we looked for another restaurant all were closed including the garden buffet. (It was changing over) went to bed without eating. Very disappointing.

Overall a wonderful cruise by JosiefenIvory

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

Our recent cruise on the Carnival Legend (my sister and I), Our first time on this ship. The ship was beautiful, with all the history on each area. I did not particular care for the added dining choice, the steakhouse. It seems as if the steakhouse took away from the excellent choices and food from the main dining room. However, oour stateroom were great, with added storage space. I would like to see shower doors instead of the shower curtains. The curtains retains water.

Disappointing by SteveS30

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Carnival Glory / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

The Norfolk cruise terminal isn't setup for a crowd that is handling their own baggage. There were 2500 people trying to use three six passenger elevators with their bags to board and only one elevator to disembark. Both ways took over two hours.

This was my first time cruising, though I am an avid sailor. I was very impressed with the size and the amenities of the ship and suite. Nice experience.
