We spent the night before the cruise to visit the lights of Moody Gardens. Great!

We flew into Houston two days before the cruise to enjoy Galveston Island. Rented a car from Enterprise car rental at airport because Enterprise has a drop off location two miles from the cruise terminal. They have a free shuttle service back to your hotel or to the terminal. Galveston Island is a really fun destination in itself. You really do need a car to see it all. We stayed at Harbor House hotel which is within walking distance to ship. Nice place but there are cheaper options all around the island. Recommended places to eat: Shrimp and Stuff, Willie G’s, Fisherman’s Warf, Salsas. There is a Walmart and Academy Sports on the Island

The new terminal was excellent but I had to take off one star because Houston felt like the armpit of America. Flying into and out of IAH was an awful experience and if I were to fly to the area again I would choose to fly into Hobby in the hopes it would be better. Also, the tolls in the Houston area are part of some EZ Tag network which isn't linked to any other kind of toll network? And finally we stopped at the Houston Space Center after our cruise, while parts of it were cool to see (like touching one of only 8 publicly accessible pieces of moon rock) many features were not functioning properly or completely broken and the kids area was incredibly disappointing for our 3 year old twins. I wouldn't recommend bringing younger children there personally.

I wanted to rate the port. We did not do any excursions. I usually cruise out of port Canaveral. Galveston port is very small. It was a little chaotic when we were dropped off. We arrived around 1 pm. There was a short wait at the security line but no wait for diamond members to check in with royal Caribbean. The lady that checked us in was very nice and pleasant. Overall check in experience was good. Only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because I didn't think the building itself was very welcoming, it kind of reminded me of a warehouse. I had a learning experience with this port too. I would suggest looking at arriving into Hobby Airport. George Bush airport is over an hour away from the port and adds transportation costs. Of course when I was looking for flights I was trying to find the cheapest flights but now that I have paid $160 in transportation (after a lot of research on transportation) I wish I would have taken that into consideration when buying the flights. Not sure if that would have made a difference but something to think about.

Galveston was fine but to be fair, we only were there long enough to park so a rating from me isn't quite a fair assessment. The parking however was a breeze!
