Great island if you can get on it. The clockwise and Anticlockwise buses will get you around the island inexpensively. Be sure to stop at a bank and pick up a three dollar bill for a souvenir. The pink one has a picture of the queen. Ask for the green one with the native girl riding a shark.

We were skirting a storm for most of the South Pacific part of the cruise. The wind was so bad the captain couldn't get the anchor to set even after several tries. He eventually decided to move on. Not much to see from the ship but the water looked about as rough as it was at Fanning Island. Once again it was probably a good thing. I only gave it 1 star because we didn't go ashore, not because it wouldn't have been an interesting place to see.

Best part of Rarotonga was the $3 local bus ride around the tropical island. After the bus ride we went to the open air market. We found some booths with imperfect black pearls for as low as $20. (A black pearl if a good grade is over $200.) So $20 is souvenir quality!

A local man who hailed from the USA decades ago took us on a ride around the island. That was surely more interesting and way less expensive than a ship tour. Basically this small island has a couple of towns, lots of houses along the beach, palm trees everywhere, and a volcano in the center. Everybody is related to everybody else.

This is the only stop on the cruise that is not polynesian...it is a New Zealand island. This is where you should buy some things....the dollar is strong against the NZ dollar.

Circle island tour a waste. The folks who did "day at the beach with snorkeling" raved about it. Beautiful beach. The shuttle bus goes to ok but not great beaches. We were there on a national holiday, so missed out on marketplace.

Toured the island in a cab driven by the former king's grandson. Lots of fun.
