We had visited previously. Feel safe and comfortable. "Expensive" Tahiti is a myth. Walked from our apartments pre and post cruise. Only took a cab because of luggage. Even have a favorite taxi driver in Papeete.

Papeete is a busy city. The port was at the city. Best thing to do is to walk two blocks to the Market. At the market the first morning after we arrived, we bought two bunches of tropical flowers for $10..We had brought a large empty plastic peanut butter container with us to use as a vase for this purpose. There were also ready made floral displays available there for about $20 and more. Our flowers lasted the entire 10 day cruise!

Papeete, Tahiti — 2 Excursions East Coast Highlights: We visited the home, now a museum, of poet and writer, James Norman Hall, the author of Mutiny on the Bounty. It was an interesting and okay collection of artifacts but not a memorable experience for us. We used this short tour to fill in our day away from the ship. Discover Tahiti's West Coast: We learned about the culture and customs of ancient and modern day Tahiti. We really enjoyed the beautiful Vaipahi Gardens and visiting the Marae Arahurahu Temple, an ancient meeting place and shrine on Tahiti’s western coast. From there we did a walking tour that took us past the Maraa Grotto, Tahiti's largest underwater cave, and tropical gardens populated by unusual waterfowl. We were surprised to come upon a Muscovy duck protecting her five ducklings, three of which we did not know were there until Mama stood up! I captured numerous photos and videos of the flora and fauna during our walking tour.
