We walked ashore and negotiated a deal with a driver; Darren and his very small three cylinder French manufactured taxi to take us to all the main highlights. He agreed to AUD$100 for the tour, so he, not a small man, my wife and I squeezed in for a tour of Luganville with all its hidden back streets lookouts and points of interest, several “Blue Holes” the abandoned WWII American bomber base and airport and Million Dollar Point. Darren was a wealth of knowledge and displayed a love of his country and great curiosity about ours. After approx. 3-4 hours we arrived back at the Ship where I gave him an extra AUD$20 so a total of $120 all up. I didn’t pay until we got back to the port but at no time did I have any doubt over his character and from what he told us I believed him to be a gentle caring father and provider and I was proud to be able to contribute to his annual earnings. I liked Luganville and would like to go back sometime and take advantage of one of the new resorts popping up.

Feel sorry for Luganville . Unkept town where council should clean the streets up for tourists to come and spend money in the town.

Note that this is a 3rd world country and the tour descriptions tend to over promise what you actually get. We went on the Northern Seaside and Blue Hole Tour (LY05) and while the Blue Hole is a stunningly beautiful location, I would not recommend this tour. The trip from the ship is 50 minutes long in a mini-van on very bad dust roads across to the other side of the island. If you want to visit the Blue Hole (and I do recommend it) you should try to find someone with a covered 4WD to take you there you may pay more per person, but trust me, 50 minutes of pothole pain is not worth it.

Get a local taxi driver to take you for a tour. AUD$30 got us a great half day incl blue holes experience. Language was fun..we asked to see the sights & driver thought we wanted to see the "signs". He pointed out the sign for the soccer oval, bridge signs, resort signs etc 😂 Eventually we all had a good laugh about the misunderstanding & were taken to his village for a game of pool & kava.

We took a walk into town to pass the time before our tour, it was interesting to go in the shops and look around. We did the blue lagoon and canoe tour here! Awesome!! The river was clear and peaceful and the blue lagoon was amaxing. Crystal blue waters and the kids had fun jumping off the tree rope!!!
