You will learn a lot about the workings of the canal and there is lots to see on shore as you transit. A local canal representative will come on board to give you details about what you are seeing.

Fascinating. We transited without stopping. No excursion.

Very long, very exciting day - this feat of engineering, prior to computers, completely amazed me - what a fabulous experience!

Transiting the canal was the prime purpose of the trip. We weren't disappointed. The Holland America provided commentator did great job explaining what we were seeing.

Stand on the upper deck while going through one set of locks and then on deck 4 for the other set of locks. On the lower deck you will see the detail of the track used by the mules and get a better appreciation of the rise/fall of the ship in the locks.
