The Embara Indian Village tour was awesome. A wonderful glimpse of history and culture. These Embara people migrated to the Panama Canal region from the Darian wilderness in Northern Columbia about 60 years ago to find better farming opportunities and safety from rebel soldiers. At first they were successful but then the government made their area a national park so no more farming and hunting. Now they survive through tourism while trying to keep their culture and simple lifestyle... You take a 90 minute guided bus ride, then board dugout canoes for 15 minute river tour to the village. The villagers wear ceremonial clothes. They feed you Talapia fish and fried Plantains wrapped in a banana leaf. They explain their story, play music and dance. You can explore their village then go to their covered outdoor market to buy souvenirs. They weave bowls and carve trinkets. I assume most of the carvings are not really made by them but that's OK. Prices are not bad and you feel better giving them your dollars than the stores in town.

Town was a bit far from the dock, but there are building a real cruise port so soon that will be better. Did the Monkey Island tour, had a great guide who talked a lot about the area.

We went back through the Canal on a smaller boat and it was fascinating - definitely the highlight of our shore trips. The scale was so completely different than the cruise ship, it put the Canal in a whole new perspective.
