Probolinggo, located in East Java, Indonesia, is a city and regency with a rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural attractions. Established as a Dutch colonial outpost in the 18th century, Probolinggo grew into a significant port city due to its strategic location along the Madura Strait. Today, it retains colonial-era architecture in areas like the old town, offering a glimpse into its historical past. The city is perhaps best known as the primary gateway to Mount Bromo, an active volcano and one of Indonesia’s most iconic landmarks. Visitors flock to the area to witness the sunrise over the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, explore the dramatic “Sea of Sand” (a vast volcanic plain), and hike to the crater rim for unparalleled views. The Tenggerese people, who inhabit the highlands around Mount Bromo, are known for their unique culture and Hindu-Buddhist traditions, exemplified during the Yadnya Kasada Festival, when offerings are thrown into Mount Bromo’s crater as part of a centuries-old ritual. Aside from Mount Bromo, Probolinggo offers other tourist attractions, such as Madakaripura Waterfall, a stunning cascade located in a lush canyon believed to be the meditation site of Gajah Mada, a legendary military leader from the Majapahit Empire. The nearby Bentar Beach provides a serene coastal escape, complete with mangroves and a suspension bridge, while Beejay Bakau Resort combines eco-tourism and leisure with its mangrove boardwalks and beachside activities. Probolinggo is also a haven for culinary enthusiasts. The region is famous for its sweet “madu” mangoes, as well as seafood dishes such as grilled fish and shrimp sourced fresh from the Madura Strait. Local markets offer a chance to sample regional snacks and purchase handmade crafts.

The Westerdam Officer in charge of Guest Services did not handle the tender allocation well at all. It was extremely stressful trying to get off the ship to join my independent excursion. I still wonder why Probolinggo was a port on this cruise.
