Cairns, Australia overview

Cairns was founded in 1876 as a port for the inland gold mines of Queensland. It is now the heart of the Tropical North of Queensland, and is one of Australia's most welcoming cities. Stroll, relax, fly a kite, or have a barbecue on the Esplanade, a popular gathering area. Enjoy several great beaches just north of the city. Cairns is also a great place to watch migratory birds.

Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. We did not use an excursion from Oceania but were able to find an independent excursion on the local dock who transported us to Green Island. Trip to the island took about 35 minutes. We were able to snorkel on our own (they provide the gear). There are also glass-bottom boat tours and semi-submarine tours on the island. Excursion was about 4.5 hours and was very well run. (Check Shore Excursions Group on line for trips that are much less expensive than those offered on the ship.)

Paid $15 for a return shuttle into the city and back. Went to the shopping centre and bought stuff... walked through a local market, back on the ship for lunch.

Cairns is a great holiday destination - always warm and humid, but for this visit on Luminosa it was partly cloudy and not as hot as it will be later. In the past we have done shore excursions to Kuranda with the cable car over the rain forest and the Kuranda train back, and spent time shopping, visiting the Botanical Gardens or at the Esplanade Lagoon. So this time we just walked to the Pier Shopping centre and back along the boardwalk. An easy relaxing couple of hours.
