I have lived on the northern boarder of Mexico all my life, even the cash registers in most businesses in tourists towns show transactions in both currencies in order to keep the tourists happy knowing they are getting legal trade & they use U.S. currency. But I have never been further south than El Golfo Mexico yet.

Also if places offer change in pesos then refuse to accept the peso most places will give you change in dollars…if you are going to a chain store or an upscale shop and if your card does not charge you an exchange rate…it is better to use your card…the card will offer the current exchange rate

very widely. I would think the chance of not accepting us dollars or a credit card in the main tourist areas is almost nil.

Visa and Mastercard are safely used throughout tourist area of Cabo. Most places also accept US dollars.

We have never done an exchange of money going to Mexico.

no you will not need Mexican pesos in Mexico, they will gladly take American currency as a matter of fact they prefer it. just be sure that you don't get overcharged and pay more in American dollars then the item is worth. also keep in mind that they prefer the money to be in good shape and not all worn out.

Use only US dollars. Its a big head ache to swap currencies and have to swap your unused monopoly money back. Plus you don't need the stress of having to convert everything in your mind..(ie the store wants 120 Pecos for this tiny surfboard painted with budwieser, how much is that)

They love USD because they’ll generally give you a lousy exchange rate. If you have one, pay with a credit card (Visa or MasterCard preferably - AMEX and Discover aren’t as widely accepted) with no foreign transactions fees and tell them to charge you in pesos to beat that game.

I think it is common courtesy to use the currency of the country you are in. Would you accept Mexican Pesos as payment for any goods or services in your country?
Answered by Richard1Canuck on September 09, 2022
I cannot disagree with the comment "common courtesy". But the tourist port areas generally exist because of the cruise ships and are seeking hundreds of thousands of American dollars and not tens of thousands of tourists spending pesos as they might in other areas. if you don't know Spanish, and if you don't know how to count out numbers in Spanish, it will drive you freaking crazy to use pesos.

We always exchange to the local currency when traveling to another country. As someone else stated in the comments— it’s common courtesy.
