Having learned from day 1, we booked our own tour with one of the options who are awaiting you as you leave the ship. Less expensive and very worthwhile. We called the shots to a great extent. Saw the volcano (including lava tube) mango fields, waterfalls, banyon trees, macademia nut store, and orchid nursery. Very nice and great driver ("Cousin Joe"). Just the right amount of time. Back to the ship by 3pm for cocktails! You have to stay awake for the ride past the volcano as you're leaving Hilo (we were still somewhat jet lagged) to see the lava flow at night. Amazing view of a lifetime and we saw it from our balcony!

Had a great excursion here. Akaka Falls and Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, which has plants in their natural habitat and exotic birds and animals. I’m always fascinated that many of our houseplants grow in the wild on the Hawaiian Islands.

Volcano National Park! Also Pride of Hawaii passes by at night to see molten lava flow which was a fantastic sight!
