Enjoyed the tour but with the restrictions we couldn’t do anything on our own. Beautiful island, full of history. Hopefully we will have a chance to return.

Bought an excursion Come n Enjoy Gran Canaria. They set us up with a hired car to pick us up at the port, driver was very professional, car was a Lexus and very clean. Took an hour drive to Maspalomas to to the Gran Canaria Fun Cup experience. Was a blast getting to race Fun Cup VW’s. After hearing back up to Santa Cruz, we wandered through town and ended up having sangria and pizza just off the beach with a spectacular ocean view. After a little more shopping and buying some Havana club 5 year rum for $12euros we wandered through the mall near the ship- huge 4 story mall. Found some great sea salts (a red wine one, charcoal one, herbed one and picante one they are wonderful!)

Thoroughly enjoyed this port. We used the hop on hop off bus to get a feel for where we wanted to spend a few hours. A few other cruisers we talked to on the ship said they always go to the 'old town' when they visit this port. Sure enough that's where we got off the bus. S.I. Cathedral is amazing. Definitely spend some time there, take in the history from the late 1400s to the present day and take the stairs to the top of the tower. Just downhill from the cathedral by the theater is an excellent restaurant, tasca la Piccadita. Great menu selections but definitely try the waiter's suggestions here.... It's going to be fresh. While you enjoy lunch you are sitting at the edge of the old town and just up the stairs is the street level of the new town and your bus stop for hop on hop off and back to port.

Bring your swimsuits. The beach is the most popular place to go and it's gorgeous. Also, spend some time siting by the port at a little cafe. There's also a free Christopher Columbus museum that's set in a cute little area.

Our excursion was TERRIBLE. We spent $75 per person for our excursion. We spend several hours on a bus driving around the same few blocks within the cruise port. We also got LEFT BEHIND on our excursion. While visiting a museum (which by the was cost only $4 for entrance) our tour guide said to meet at the entrance at 1:15pm. We were at the door at 1:15pm but our group was long gone!!!! We stopped at a botanical gardens that was boring. We stopped at a really amazing view point and had FIVE MINUTES THERE. Ugh. We also stopped at a restaurant and got a plate of cheese and a bowl of potatoes to share with the table. Ever stop we stayed at for only a few minutes and spent the majority of the time on the bus.
