Favorite favorite favorite. Madeira is a MUST for everyone. This is the prettiest place I have ever been. Mountains and valleys everywhere. We did the Best of Madeira and man...it was an amazing tour. Valley of the Nuns was much cooler than I expected. Cable car ride offered fabulous views. The toboggan was insanely fun. I love Madeira.

Great terrain! It was lush and green with a couple of magnificent cliff sides. The white washed architecture was neat. We did a hop on hop off bus tour which is a fabulous way to see the city in a short period of time. We happened to be there for the Flower Festival which was beautiful. We also did the cable car to the the village of Monte which offered spectacular views. We were hoping to take the toboggan ride down the hill, but the wait in line to get on was at least 45-50 minutes so we opted out and took the cable car back down the hill. I did't want to eat into my day standing in line.

This was by far my favorite port. We took a cab to old town. Another cab driver approached us and offered to drive us up to the toboggan run and wait for us at the end of the run. He then drove us to the cable car. This was in reverse of how most people did these activities, so we had no lines to wait in. It was Great! I then walked aroun old town. I would definitely recommend all these activities.

Beautiful island with breathtaking vistas. We used Lido Tours for a private excursion. We'd used them last year, and they were terrific. I requested the same guide, Nuno Pedro, who is excellent. This year I wanted to visit the great surfing spots on the extreme western part of the island, and Nuno put together a tour that covered what I wanted to see.

This happened to be our shortest port day but this island quickly became one of our favorite ports. We wandered on our own and it wasn’t difficult. We walked from the port down the water front street (which is like and endless park) to the cable car station. The ride up to Monte was very enjoyable and scenic. The lush mountain is gorgeous. We saw goats and houses - it gives you a glimpse into how the locals live. There is a beautiful garden at the top and the streets are crazy steep but beautiful. We saw Our Lady of Monte church from a far. We then took the toboggan ride down. Really cool experience - the guides or toboggan boys push you down in a wicker sled. On your one mile trip down you wind through the gorgeous streets. Pictures are taken At certain spots but we were so caught up in the ride and scenery that the guides had a hard time getting us to look. At the end of the ride there is a restaurant and some vendors. I bought a beautiful cork purse here that I still have. It has hand painted ceramic tile print on it. I love this purse and gave it so much wear it’s starting to fray now - but after almost 5 years. Well worth the price I paid which I think was some where around 85 - 95 euros. It was a splurge but we were in our anniversary trip. We then took the hop on/off bus around the City to see the sites. Word to the wise bring sunscreen especially if you want to go on the top of this bus (we forgot to pack ours after applying in the morning. And bring/drink plenty of water. We stopped at one of the market places and wandered through the vendors and brought back a beautiful table cloth for Christmas. Check out their linens and cork pieces - they are know for this. You get to glimpse the cork trees on the hop on/off bus. We also stopped at a street vendor and had the most amazing Portuguese like bread with the chourico baked into it. They buttered it and heated it on the griddle. We dream of going back here again.
